Wisconsin looks to secure first win over No. 8 Maryland

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin women's basketball team (10-5, 1-3 B1G) is back on its home turf after a tough West Coast swing, ready to face off against the No. 8 Maryland Terrapins (14-1, 4-1 B1G) in a highly anticipated Saturday afternoon showdown. Tip off is set for 1:30 p.m. (CT) on Jan. 11, and the action will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.

Here are five things to know before the Badgers face the Maryland Terrapins:

1. A GLANCE AT THE SEASON: After battling through a challenging road stretch, the Badgers are eager to get back on track and grab their second Big Ten win of the season. Following their solid victory over Rutgers, Wisconsin has had a tough time against other conference opponents. However, the Badgers are a force at home, having dropped just one game this season. The team is fired up to protect the Kohl Center and pick up a crucial win as they continue to make their mark in the Big Ten.

2. LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers took a tough 78-59 loss to the Washington Huskies in their most recent contest, a game that saw some bright moments early on but ultimately slipped away. Wisconsin came out strong, firing on all cylinders in the first quarter. But in the second, Washington surged with a 6-0 run, eventually overtaking the Badgers by halftime with a 31-25 lead. Despite a few strong pushes in the second half, the Huskies kept their foot on the gas, never letting Wisconsin fully close the gap. As a team, Wisconsin shot 36.2% (21-58) from the field, 27.8% (5-12) from beyond the arc and 100.0% (11-11) from the free-throw line. The last time the Badgers shot 100% from the charity stripe was in the 2012-13 season when they went 15-15 in a match up against Ohio State.

3. SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS: Maryland, sitting strong with a 14-1 overall record and 4-1 mark in conference play, comes to Madison hungry after their first loss of the season — a narrow 79-74 defeat at the hands of USC. Under the leadership of head coach Brenda Frese, the Terrapins have been a force, averaging an impressive 83.1 points per game while dominating the boards with 45.3 rebounds per contest.

 4. HISTORY WITH MARYLAND: Wisconsin has yet to secure a win over Maryland in their 13 previous meetings, with the last match up resulting in a 79-63 loss during the 2023-24 season. However, the Badgers are determined to rewrite the narrative in this contest. They'll be looking to break their losing streak and deliver a statement performance on their home court.

5. LOOKING AHEAD: Wisconsin will stay at home to face No. 9 Ohio State on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 8:00 p.m. (CT). It's another critical showdown for the Badgers as they continue their Big Ten journey. With momentum from the Maryland game, Wisconsin will be ready to take on another powerhouse and prove they're a serious contender in the conference.
