Forging Firsts: Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings

My story begins in Philadelphia, PA, where I was born to parents who entered the working world at a very young age. Although they didn’t have access to education, they instilled in me core values like respect and the courage to speak up when something felt wrong.

The first person to broaden my view of what was possible was my fifth-grade teacher, Ms. Ethel Benn - a remarkable Black woman who saw potential in me and opened my mind to all that I could be.

Noe – Growing up, I never really considered golf as a traditional sport. To me, it was a status symbol. As a young Latino kid, I was encouraged to play soccer, football and basketball – sports I thought were suitable for someone like me. That sentiment was echoed by my friends, parents and other kids at school. it wasn’t until college that I even stepped foot on a golf course. As a business major, I saw golf as a tool for making connections, and that’s all I initially thought golf was good for.

Melvin - For me, sports were about wearing jerseys, getting dirty and forming bonds with teammates on the field. Polo shirts were something I wore before the game, not during. As a kid, golf was out of reach – one of many sports I never considered because my family couldn’t afford it. I never saw anyone with dreadlocks and tattoos on the golf course. Never saw people who looked like me. So, I assumed golf wasn’t for me.

I always knew I was born into something more than a family; we were a community.

When my great-grandparents transformed their small land in Poinsett County, Arkansas into a 180-acre farm, they not only became owners of the largest Black owned farm in the area, but they also built a home for our future relatives. My great-grandma Sally had 18 kids. Those children, and their children, eventually went on to become doctors, lawyers, athletes, teachers. Our houses, land, even churches are all connected by one road: Route One.

It’s always been Hockey.

When my dad signed me up for figure skating so I could learn how to move on the ice, it was so I would eventually be ready for hockey.

When I left my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio at age 13 to attend a boarding school in Rochester, New York, separating me from friends, family and everything else I had known up to that moment, it was for hockey.

Family is central to my journey to Wisconsin. They not only supported me in becoming a student-athlete, but also as the first in our family to attend a university, I feel responsible for setting a standard for future generations in my family. Being the first member of my family to attend college is enough for my parents to be proud of me, but I think traveling to a new country, learning a new language, and adapting to a new culture truly justify the effort they put into my journey.
