LINCOLN, Neb. — Wisconsin (3-7, 0-1 B1G) heads to Nebraska (6-3, 1-0 B1G) for its first conference road game of the season on Wednesday. Tip time is 7 p.m. from Pinnacle Bank Arena and the game can be streamed on BTN+ or listened to on WTSO.
Here are five things to know before the Badgers compete against the Cornhuskers:
1. LAST TIME OUT: Wisconsin began Big Ten conference play against No. 10 ranked Iowa, and fell by a final score of 102-71. The Badgers remained within five points of the Hawkeyes at the end of quarter one, but started to lose momentum as their opponents continuously drained shots. Wisconsin outscored its opponent 21-18 in the third quarter and was able to inch within 15 points with nine minutes remaining in the game, but ultimately ended up dropping its first B1G matchup.Â
2. FEAR THE FRESHMAN: Serah Williams' first-career Big Ten game was against one of the toughest teams in the nation, but she didn't let her lack of experience impact her game. Williams recorded a team-high 15 points (5-10 FG, 5-6 FT) and was able to play aggressive basketball without finding herself in foul trouble. In a game where senior leaders Julie Pospisilova and Avery LaBarbera combined for just 12 points, the freshman was able to be an impressive offensive force for her team.Â
3. HILLIARD FINDING HER STRIDE: In just her second game back, Sydney Hilliard looked much improved from her initial game against Florida State. The senior logged 11 points (5-8 FG, 1-1 FT), which was the second-most on the team. She added three rebounds and two assists, and overall, appeared more confident and aggressive on the court.Â
4. NEAR-PERFECT FREE THROWS: Wisconsin shot 95.7% from the free-throw line, draining 22 of 23. The Badgers' average free-throw percentage this season is 75.9%, which was greatly surpassed in the game against Iowa. This marks the sixth-highest free-throw percentage UW has shot in a game with 14 or more attempts, and is the highest mark since March 7, 2013.Â
5. SCOUTING NEBRASKA: The Cornhuskers started off hot in Big Ten play when they took down the No. 20 Terrapins in their conference opener, and they will be a competitive first road match for the Badgers. Nebraska was selected fifth in the 2022-23 Media Big Ten Preseason Rankings after finishing last season sixth in the Big Ten with an 11-7 overall record. Similar to Wisconsin, they are a young squad, with nine of their 13 players being underclassmen. One of those includes Alexis Markowski, who was awarded to the 2022-23 Coaches Preseason All-Big Ten Team and 2022-23 Media Preseason All-Big Ten Team. The sophomore leads the team in both average rebounds per game with 8.9 and average blocks with 0.8 and is second in points with 12.8. Jaz Shelley is first on the team in average points per game with 13.7, as well as assists with 7.1 and steals with 1.9.Â
