MADISON, Wis – Wisconsin (5-13, 2-13 B1G) looks to continue its winning ways, traveling to Minnesota (6-9, 5-8) for a Border Battle against the Golden Gophers on Sunday. Game time is 1 p.m. from Williams Arena in Minneapolis on B1G Network+.
The Border Battle is an all-sport competition between the athletic departments of Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Badgers currently lead the 2020-21 race 170-110 with 20 points on the line in Sunday's game.
Here are five things to know, heading into Sunday's game.
1. IMANI'S B1G OUTING: Leading all scorers in Wednesday's upset win over No. 12 Ohio State, junior forward
Imani Lewis set a new career high in scoring with 27 points while adding a game-high 14 rebounds for her Big Ten-leading 10th double-double of the season. Scoring double digits in the last eight games and notching a double-double in seven of those eight, Lewis' contributions continue to shine for the Badgers as they look to take down the Gophers this weekend.
2. DOUBLING A DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Joining Lewis in the double-double club in Wisconsin's win over Ohio State was sophomore Sara Stapleton. Stapleton recorded her first career double-double in Wisconsin's first game of the season against Western Illinois and has turned up her play the last two contests. Stapleton scored in double figures in back-to-back games in the first time in her career, putting up 13 points while adding 10 rebounds for her second career double-double against the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-3 post is averaging 12 points and 7.5 rebounds in the Badgers' last two games.
3. SCOUTING MINNESOTA: The Gophers sit 11th in the Big Ten at 6-9 overall and 5-8 in the conference. They are led offensively by Jasmine Powell and Sara Scalia, both averaging over 15 points a game. This double-guard play matches up very well with Wisconsin's scoring depth hoping to lock down Minnesota's guards on defense and exploit its post play with Lewis and Stapleton on offense. Wisconsin will look to attack early and often as the Gophers sit last in the Big Ten in defensive field goal percentage (45.8%) and second to last for opponent points allowed (80.4).
4. LAST TIME VS MINNESOTA: The Badgers hosted the first round of the Border Battle on Jan. 3, falling to Minnesota 88-83 in overtime. Sophomore Julie Pospisilova went off for a career high 28 points followed by Sydney Hilliard with 21 and Lewis with 13. On defense, the Badgers were able to hold off Minnesota's leading scorers, but struggled against guard Gadiva Hubbard, who totaled 24 points, going 3-8 from 3-point range. Wisconsin also had 21 turnovers against the Gophers in January as Minnesota scored 25 points off turnovers.
