The Border Battle is an all-sports competition between the athletic programs at Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Badgers lead the 2020-21 battle 50-0. Twenty points are on the line in Sunday's game.
1. SETBACK AT NO. 16 MICHIGAN: Facing its first ranked team of the season, Wisconsin struggled at No. 16 Michigan, falling to the Wolverines 92-42 on Thursday afternoon at Crisler Center. The Badgers shot a season-low 29.7% (19-64) from the field as Michigan's stifling defense caused numerous scoring droughts for UW. No Badger scored in double figures at Michigan, marking the first time this season without a player in double digits. UW was also outrebounded for the first time this season as Michigan finished with a 50-29 advantage.
2. BATTLING BROOKE: Freshman
Brooke Schramek scored a career-high nine points at Michigan, sharing the team lead in scoring with
Sydney Hilliard and
Imani Lewis. Schramek, a 6-foot-1 guard, was 3-8 from the field, including a career-best 2-3 from 3-point range. She also added three rebounds and one assist.
3. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: Over their last three games, the Badgers are averaging 14.0 turnovers per game after recording a season-low 13 turnovers against North Dakota and at Michigan. UW is still struggling with turnovers on the season, averaging 17.2 per game after tallying 27 giveaways vs. Rutgers on Dec. 11.
4. IRON BADGERS: Junior
Imani Lewis has played in all 69 games as a Badger, starting 65. The 6-foot-1 forward is averaging 13.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game for her career while shooting .434. Lewis has 917 points in her career and is on track to become the 27th UW player to record 1,000 career points.
Sophomore Julie Pospíšilovà has played in all 37 games at Wisconsin, starting 15. She is averaging 5.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
5. SCOUTING MINNESOTA: The Golden Gophers (1-4, 0-3 B1G) return to action after a 10-day break. Minnesota last played on Dec. 23, falling at home to Indiana, 75-54, on Dec. 23.
Sophomore Jasmine Powell leads the Gophers with a scoring average of 17.2 points per game, including 21 points in the opener against Eastern Illinois and 22 against Drake. In addition to her scoring prowess, which is currently 13th in the Big Ten, Powell ranks second in the Big Ten in assists per game (6.2). Minnesota has two of the top 3-point shooters in the Big Ten with Powell tying for eighth with 2.0 and redshirt senior Gadiva Hubbard adding 1.8 triples per game.
