HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Hearts broke all over the Sears Centre Arena as the referee waved his arms and yelled out "No shot." The call ended the Badgers' (9-20) season with a 58-56 loss to Purdue in the first round of the Big Ten Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night.

The fateful shot, which would have been the game-winner, was chucked up by senior Jacki Gulczynski just as the clock was expiring but didn't leave her hands in time to beat the buzzer.

? Fifth-year senior Cassie Rochel set Big Tournament single-game record with seven blocks
? Two Badgers score in double figures for Badgers
? Wisconsin ends season 9-20 overall

"When I felt it come off my hands, I didn't think I got it off," Gulczynski said. "So my teammates came and ran at me. I was kind of like taken back because I didn't think I got it on time. And then when they took so long to deliberate, all right, maybe I did.

"But, you know, it's upsetting. It's a tough way to lose. But, you know, we take a lot out of our career we've had here and couldn't be more happy to say I've played for this university."

After leading by nine points (51-42) with a little over eight minutes to play, Purdue (11-19) went on a 12-1 run to take a 54-53 lead with 2:46 on the clock. The Boilermakers led 56-54 off two Whitney Bays' free throws with 1:15 remaining before UW's Dakota Whyte hit a jump shot and tied the game at 56 with nine seconds left to play.

Purdue's April Wilson drove nearly the full length of the court, scoring a layup with three seconds on the clock, to give the Boilermakers a 58-56 lead. It was enough time for the Badgers as Gulczynski's shot was just fractions of a second too late.

The game was decided in the second where Wisconsin struggled with its shooting. After shooting 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the first period, UW shot just 33.3 percent (8-of-24) in the second half to end the game at 47.1 percent. The Big Ten's top 3-point shooting team went just 4-of-10 from 3-point range with all makes coming in the first half.

Whyte led Wisconsin with 16 points, shooting 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field. Junior Nicole Bauman tallied 14 points, marking her 12th-straight double-digit scoring game and the 23rd time this season in double figures. She also led the team in rebounds with seven.
Purdue had three players in double figures as Bays scored 16 points. Liza Clemons and Ashley Morrissette both added 12 points
.
Wisconsin outblocked Purdue 8-3 as fifth-year senior Cassie Rochel broke the Big Ten Tournament single-game record for blocks in her last game in a Badger uniform with seven. The mark also tied her career high.

After staying close the entire first half, the Badgers pulled ahead with a 12-4 run ignited by Bauman's signature 3-point bomb at the 9:44 mark. The streak continued when Whyte sank one of her own behind the arc to put the Badgers up 29-22 with 6:10 left to play in the first half.

A 3-point shot from senior AnnMarie Brown at 4:42 gave the Badgers their largest lead of the first half at 32-24. They repeated the 8-point lead again when junior Tessa Cichy drained a jumper at 4:16 to put the Badgers up 34-26
.
Both teams went scoreless until the 2:31 mark when Bays laid in a shot to cut the Badger lead to six points, 34-28. Wisconsin went ahead at the half when Rochel hit a baseline jumper with 37 seconds on the clock, putting the Badgers up 37-32 going into halftime.

Wisconsin started the second half with a 6-2 run ending with a layup from Bauman to go up 41-36 at 16:09. Both teams had a scoring draught until Whyte hit a jump shot at 14:34 to put UW up 43-36.
A 6-0 run keyed by a layup and two made free throws from Rochel, gave the Badgers the largest lead of the game with 8:12 left on the clock, 51-42.

Purdue outscored the Badgers 16-5 over the last eight minutes.

The Boilermakers outrebounded Wisconsin 36-32 behind eight boards from Clemons.
