FREEPORT, Bahamas -- Second half struggles continued to plague the Wisconsin women’s basketball team Friday night, as the Badgers fell to East Carolina, 61-43, in the final game of the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas.

The Badgers (1-4) opened play with a 5-0 run fueled by senior Michala Johnson who scored on a layup and an old-fashioned three-point play at 17:25.

 Fast Facts
• Badgers 36 rebounds are second-highest of the season
• Johnson gets double-double with 14 points, 10 boards
• Three players score in double figures for Badgers

The Pirates (4-1) went on a hot 8-0 run to take the lead and go up 12-7 with 10:43 remaining. UW rallied off of contributions from Dakota Whyte and Jacki Gulczynski before a jumper from Nicole Bauman at the 7:34 mark tied it up, 13-13.

The Badgers took the lead only one more time after Bauman sunk a 3-pointer well behind the line. East Carolina reassembled and went on a 9-0 run to end the half 22-15.

UW started the second half with a turnover and an easy layup put the Pirates ahead 24-18 at 19:38.

The Badgers gained confidence on a 7-0 run with 17:03 to go to get the score within three, 28-25. The momentum was quickly squashed by ECU’s 15-4 run where the Badgers committed five turnovers within seven minutes.

Wisconsin was held to a 34.0 shooting percentage from the field. UW struggled to find the mark beyond the arc only going 4-for-12 at 33.3 percent from 3-point range.

"We have open shots and we need to hit them," Wisconsin head coach Bobbie Kelsey said. "You have to commit to it and sacrifice to be good. It's not for lack of effort but we have to make sure in practice we are putting pressure on them."

UW had its lowest mark from the free-throw line, only making it on five of their 12 opportunities. Wisconsin picked up 13 personal fouls in the game.

The Pirates outrebounded the Badgers, 42-36.

Jada Payne was the key to the Pirates’ offense adding 17 points and shooting 7-for-15 from the field and 60.0 percent from 3-point range.

Johnson notched a double-double and led the Badgers with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Wisconsin forced 13 turnovers in the game but gave away 23. Twenty-three of East Carolina’s points in the second half came off of UW turnovers.

Wisconsin returns to action in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge where it will face Miami on December 4 at 7 p.m. (CT) in Coral Gables, Fla.
