NASHVILLE -- The Badgers scrapped back, trying to dig themselves out of a an early first-half hole, but the Vanderbilt Commodores were just too much to handle Saturday night in the championship game of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament in Nashville. Wisconsin suffered an 81-69 loss to the tournament hosts to fall to 4-2 on the season.

Vanderbilt (6-2) jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and Wisconsin was forced to play from behind the entire night. The Badgers got within one, 7-6, at the 16:51 mark on a free throw by Morgan Paige, but the Commodores sprinted right back out to a commanding seven point, 13-6, lead just two minutes later.

VU extended its lead to 16, 31-15, on a 3-pointer by Christina Foggie at the 8:51 mark. Twice the Badgers got within eight on layups by Dakota Whyte, but an 8-0 run pushed Vanderbilt's lead back up to 16.

Trailing 41-30 at the half, Wisconsin went on a13-2 run over the first 5:44 to get within one, 45-44. A 3-pointer by Morgan Paige at the 13:33 mark tied the game, 47-47. Back-and-forth play saw three more ties before Vanderbilt began to pull away.

Tied 59-59 with 8:18 remaining, VU outscored the Badgers 22-10 to claim the tournament crown.

"We fought back," said head coach Bobbie Kelsey after the game.  "I'm proud of the kids, they could have folded up the tent and called it a day but they didn't. You always want to see that as a coach because, again, it's hard to win every game you play, but if you are going to lose you want to go down scrapping."

After a cold start, the Badgers finished the game 25-of-53 (47.2 percent) from the floor, shooting 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) beyond the arc.

Vanderbilt shot 50 percent (30-of-60), including a 14-of-24 (58.3 percent) performance in the second half. The Commodores were 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range.

VU outrebounded UW, 39-26, with 13 offensive boards. The Badgers committed 15 turnovers, dished off 11 assists and swiped six steals.

Taylor Wurtz paced the Badgers with a team-high 18 points. Both Paige and Whyte finished the game with 14 apiece.

Foggie ended the evening with a game-high 23 points, while Jasmine Lister and Kylee Smith both scored in double figures for the Commodores.

After three games on the road, Wisconsin returns home to the Kohl Center on Thursday to host Boston College in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
