MADISON, Wis. -- Despite leading by as many as 12 points in the second half, it was not enough for the Wisconsin women's basketball team, who lost a 73-70 overtime heartbreaker to No. 11 Michigan State Thursday night.

 Fast Facts
• Wisconsin drops to third in Big Ten standings
• Badgers led by career-high 23 points from Lin Zastrow
• UW trailed in rebounds, 40-30

Wisconsin's first league defeat at the Kohl Center drops it to third place in the Big Ten Conference standings behind Penn State (8-2) and Michigan State (7-2).

Michigan State led 30-28 at halftime and maintained a 36-32 lead with 16:23 left in regulation. However, the next 4:41 was owned by the Badgers, who went on a 10-0 run to take a 42-36 with 11:42 left on the clock.

The Badgers (12-10 overall, 7-3 Big Ten) continued to dominate the floor, extending their lead to 56-44 with 5:32 to play, outscoring the Spartans 21-8 in a 9:04 span of the second half.

However, Michigan State (19-3, 7-2) bounced back to outscore the Cardinal and White 14-4 in the final 5:32, including a 3-pointer by MSU standout Kalisha Keane with 14 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

The Badgers' were unable to take the lead during extra play as Keane, a preseason All-Big Ten pick, notched seven points in the 5-minute overtime period.

Wisconsin tied the game at 64-64 with 3:16 left in overtime, but the Spartans held Wisconsin to just one field goal in the final minutes of play.

Senior Lin Zastrow anchored the Badgers' with a career-high 23 points while also leading the team with nine rebounds. Also scoring over 20 points was fellow senior Alyssa Karel, who finished with 21. Senior Tara Steinbauer and sophomore Taylor Wurtz wrapped up the Badgers scoring in double figures with 10 and 11 points, respectively.

Wisconsin shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field, including a 41.7 percent effort from 3-point land (5-of-12). The Spartans shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field and just 5-of-20 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. State finished with the edge from the free throw line though, shooting 20-of-23 (87 percent) while Wisconsin shot just 13-of-16 (81.3 percent).

Although the Spartans struggled from long range, Keane's tied her career high with a game-high 28 points, including four treys. Cetera Washington added 14 points and shared team-high honors with Lykendra Johnson with eight rebounds apiece.

The Spartans finished with a 40-30 advantage off the glass over the Badgers and offensive pull downs made the difference in the game as Michigan State tallied 15 to the Badgers' six. MSU's performance on the offensive rebounding stage helped them record 20 second-chance points, while holding the Badgers' to just six.

The possession game was not a key factor in the game, as each team finished with 16 turnovers.

Wisconsin returns to the floor to face Indiana when it travels to Bloomington, Ind., on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT from Assembly Hall.
