MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team finished its two-game series against Penn State Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 loss.

Facing a 3-0 deficit, the Badgers made one last strong effort in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ashley Hanewich and Katie Soderberg hit back-to-back doubles with one out. Whitney Massey grounded a ball off Penn State shortstop Alyssa Renwick, but third baseman Desi Giordano was able to field the deflection and throw Hanewich out at home. The game ended as Jennifer Krueger grounded back to the pitcher.

Penn State scored its first run in the top of the second. With two on and two out, Ashley Griffith singled to shallow center, sending home the first run of the day and putting the Nittany Lions up 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Badgers responded with a scoring threat but came up empty. With two outs, Kendall Grimm singled, and then stole second. Ashley Hanewich then singled, advancing Grimm to third and taking second as Penn State threw home. The Wisconsin threat was ended with a fly out to center.

The third and fourth innings passed scoreless, but Penn State scored two runs in the top of the fifth, making it 3-0.

Hanewich paced the UW offense as she tied a career high with two hits. As a team, the Badgers tallied seven hits, three of which were doubles.
