It was the heroic hand of Wisconsin senior forward Lin Zastrow that put the game at a 54-54 deadlock at the end of regulation.
Senior guard Alyssa Karel fired up a shot with 12 seconds left in regulation that hit iron and Zastrow capitalized on the deflection by tipping it in to send the game into extra minutes.
"We wanted to get a shot going to the rim with 15 seconds to go to give ourselves a chance for an offensive board and we got a tip-in by Lin," Wisconsin head coach Lisa Stone said. "That's not me diagramming anything. That's our kids making plays."
Prior to sending the game into overtime, Wyoming led the scoreboard for the final 7:23 of regulation including a six point advantage (54-48) with 1:57 left in regulation.
The Badgers started the overtime period off strong with a basket by senior forward Tara Steinbauer with 4:44 left overtime.
Wyoming answered with a layup by Aubrey Vandiver 17 seconds later to tie the score at 56-56. However, Badger sophomore Taylor Wurtz responded with a layup to give Wisconsin a 58-56 lead with 4:09 to play.
Wisconsin never relinquished the role as the leading team for the remainder of the overtime period, outscoring the Cowgirls 5-3 in the final 4:09.
UW sealed the victory when junior Jade Davis snatched her second steal of the contest and Wyoming was called for an off-ball foul on Karel. The game was wrapped up with three seconds to go when Karel sank one of two free throw attempts.
The Cardinal and White's biggest statistical standout was its season-high .473 pecent (26-55) accuracy from the field, which was buoyed by four Badgers scoring in double figures. Zastrow led the pack with a season-high 18 points.
Karel and Steinbauer chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Wurtz finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, marking her second double-double of the season. Wurtz's hard work off the glass helped the Badgers outrebound the Cowgirls, 36-32.
Led by Zastrow, Wisconsin dominated in the paint, outscoring the Cowgirls, 32-20, from short range.
In addition, the Badgers improved their possession game by recording just 15 giveaways in 45 minutes of play and defensively held the Cowgirls to .367 (18-49) percent from the field.
"What a great game," Stone said. "This is a great environment. Their fans came out and it was just a really great women's basketball game.
"We gutted it out and I am so proud of these kids. They are tired. We didn't talk altitude, we didn't talk dryness, we didn't talk any of that stuff and they had to hold their will and when they set their mind to it they weren't going to let us walk out of here without a win. That's impressive. I am really proud of them."
The last time the Badgers' recorded an overtime victory on the road was when they captured a 76-74 win over Minnesota last year.
Wisconsin will take more than two weeks off from competition for final exams and the holidays before opening the Big Ten Conference season Dec. 30 at Purdue (5-3). Tip-off is at 6 p.m. from Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind.
