The Gaels scored four-straight free throws in the final 23 seconds of the contest to seal the win.
Senior co-captain Alyssa Karel led the Badgers with 13 points and Anya Covington added her third career double-double with 10 points and a dozen rebounds. Covington's 12 boards tied her career-best and also helped her earn All-Tournament honors. The junior co-captain finished the tournament with 26 points and 19 boards.
Saint Mary's took its largest lead of the contest with 5:33 left in the first half when Jasmine Smith laid the ball off the glass to give the Gaels the 24-12 advantage.
However, the Cardinal and White responded on both ends of the court.
In the final five minutes of play, the Badgers outscored SMC, 8-1, and decreased their deficit to 25-20 at halftime.
In the second half, UW went on a 12-0 run to obtain a six point lead, its highest of the back and forth battle.
Wisconsin tied the game for the first time of the half with 11:29 left in the contest when senior Tara Steinbauer found Karel on a backdoor cut for a smooth finger roll finish to draw the score at 36-36.
Junior Jade Davis sunk a 3-pointer with 7:56 left in the game to seal the 12-0 run and help the Badgers hold a 44-38 advantage over SMC.
Following the six point lead, UW tied the game twice and took the lead on two separate occasions before the Gaels recorded seven-straight points in the final minutes of play to slate the final score at 56-50.
Free throws proved to be a key determinant in the contest as SMC scored its final four points from behind the line. Wisconsin finished 6-of-6 from behind the free throw line and Saint Mary's finished 13-of-20 for 65.0 percent accuracy.
The Badgers' perfect free throw performance marks their first of the season; however, it also marks the fewest free throw attempts by Wisconsin this year.
Steinbauer finished with seven points and nine rebounds for UW and sophomore Taylor Wurtz added nine points and three boards for the Cardinal and White.
Despite strong rebounding efforts by Covington, Steinbauer and Wurtz, the Gaels out rebounded Wisconsin, 40-33, including, 6-1, in the final two minutes of play.
"Saint Mary's was able to do well against the man-to-man," Wisconsin head coach Lisa Stone said.
"We practiced the zone in the shoot around today I thought that it was effective, but tonight it really came down to those rebounds. We didn't come up with the ball and I don't know how many layups we missed tonight. We missed a lot of layups and a lot of open shots outside. However, I thought the rest of it looked much better today."
Northwestern was the only team to go undefeated in the weekend event after defeating Saint Mary's on Friday and BYU on Saturday.
The Badgers return to the Kohl Center on Thursday for the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge. Wisconsin tips off against No. 6 Duke at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
