The Badgers started the game with an 8-0 lead in the first 4:50 and never looked back. Their lead grew to double digits with 13:21 remaining in the first half, when sophomore Taylor Wurtz made one of her two 3-pointers of the night. Despite only finishing 4-of-11 from the3-point line, the Badgers held the Billikens without a trey in the game.
Head Coach Lisa Stone was especially impressed with how her team performed defensively, including holding Saint Louis to 20.8-percent (11-of-53) shooting.
"We challenged our team this entire week, getting back to our defensive principles," she said. "(The key to winning the game) was defense, and I'm really proud of our team. I like how we started and I like how we responded. It was a different team than what we saw Sunday (against UW-Superior)."
Saint Louis seniors Kathryn Hester and Lauren Woods combined for 28 of the Billikens' 32 total points. Hester's first points cut the Badgers' lead in half, 22-11, with 8:02 to go in the first half. Those were the last points the Badgers allowed before halftime.
Hester's 16 points, including 4-of-5 from the free-throw line, led all scorers.
Friday's game was a homecoming of sorts for junior Anya Covington, who had many family members and friends in the stands from her hometown of Edwardsville, Ill., about 40 minutes away from Saint Louis' Chaifetz Arena. She led the Badgers off the bench with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting and six rebounds.
Freshman starter Morgan Paige finished the night with six points, including going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
All 10 dressed players saw action on the court Friday, including fellow freshmen Jada Buggs and Cassie Rochel, both of whom scored points for the Cardinal and White.
"Jada had a tough matchup with Woods," Stone explained. "She had to work hard, but she got some blocks. Her length is going to help us."
Wisconsin out-rebounded Saint Louis, 44-28, including 31 defensive rebounds, and at least one rebound from each player. Freshman Lorreal Jones finished with a team-high nine rebounds for the Billikens.
The Badgers open their home schedule Sunday against William & Mary from the Colonial Athletic Association. Tip-off is at noon at the Kohl Center.
