Impressive third quarter isn’t enough

MADISON, Wis. – After a back-and-forth battle, the Wisconsin women's basketball team couldn't slow down Ohio State late, falling 80-69 at the Kohl Center on Thursday night.

Serah Williams led the Badgers (10-8, 1-6) with 20 points, with 15 of them coming in the third quarter alone. Williams secured a double-double with a season-high 17 rebounds. Tess Myers tallied 18 points, all coming from behind the arc. Myers notched a season-high in points, field goals and three-point field goals, as she went 6-14 from behind the three-point line.

Lily Krahn rounded out double-figure scoring with her second 16-point game in a row, which ties her career high, set in the previous game against Maryland.

As a team, the Badgers shot 44.8% and 41.4% from behind the arc, setting a season-high with 12 threes. The Buckeyes (17-0, 6-0) were led by Jalo Cambridge with 27 points, and as a team OSU shot 45.7%.

How it happened

The Badgers started hot, hitting back-to-back threes to open up the game from Tess Myers and Natalie Leuzinger. The Buckeyes quickly erased the lead, scoring seven unanswered points. Ohio State gained momentum to grab a 14-8 lead. The Badgers went on an 8-2 run to tie it up at 16-all. UW scored just one more bucket in the final three minutes of the first quarter as OSU held a 22-18 lead after one.

The teams battled back and forth in the second quarter as Lily Krahn got hot with two three-pointers to bring the Badgers within three at 30-27. The Buckeyes maintained their lead with a 39-32 lead heading into the half.

The Buckeyes extended their lead to 48-37 early in the third quarter, but the Badgers rallied behind a 4-0 run by Serah Williams to bring the Badgers back within seven (48-41). Williams kick-started an 8-2 run for UW as they forced an Ohio State timeout with the Badgers, trailing by just three (54-51). Despite Williams' 15-point quarter, the Badgers trailed 63-54 at the end of the third.

Ohio State pulled away early in the fourth quarter, gaining a 73-57 lead. The Badgers slowly chipped away at the lead, as a layup from Carter McCray and a three from Lily Krahn pushed the Badgers back within 10 (74-64). The deficit was too large to overcome, as Ohio State sealed the win.
