Badgers show resilience in 66-64 win

Wisconsin 3-0 for the first time since the 2018-2019 season

MADISON, Wis. — The Badgers took on South Dakota State Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Kohl Center. Brooke Schramek scored with 0.8 seconds on the clock to defeat the Jackrabbits, 66-64.

In a testament to Wisconsin's grit and relentless effort, the Badgers took down a formidable opponent in the Jackrabbits, a team that was in the NCAA tournament just a season prior. Whether the Badgers were up 13, or tied with 23 seconds to go, Wisconsin found ways to continue scoring, and emerged victorious in their third-straight contest.

The game began as D'Yanis Jimenez landed a floater to put Wisconsin up 2-0, but they quickly fell behind the Jackrabbits. UW went on a five minute scoring drought that was ended with a Serah Williams bucket. Down 11-4 early on, the Badgers had lots of ground to make up. Back-to-back threes from Ronnie Porter and Sania Copeland got the Badgers within one, and a layup for Williams gave the Badgers the lead. Wisconsin went on an 11-0 run and finished the first up 14-13.

Quarter two began and the offense was more consistent, with instant buckets from Williams, Brooke Schramek, and Natalie Leuzinger. Schramek contributed seven points in the first half including a three-pointer and four rebounds, and Wisconsin sustained a gritty energy for the entire ten minutes of play. Williams tied her career-high in blocks with four near the end of the first 20 minutes, and as the Badgers hastened the pace, they headed into the locker room up 33-32 at half.

Third quarter rolled around, and it was much of the same to start. A hook shot from Williams followed by back-to-back layups from Porter kept up with the contest's fast pace. Wisconsin fought its way to a 13-point lead, with 1:43 left in quarter three and commanded a 54-46 lead with 10 minutes to play.

South Dakota State managed to close the gap on Wisconsin, and with 50.9 seconds to play the game was tied at 62. The teams exchanged two-pointers to once again tied it at 23.1 seconds to go. With the possession, the Badgers found their way to the rim and Schramek landed a layup with 0.8 seconds on the clock to secure the win.

Wisconsin shot 41.9% (26-62) from the field range, including 42.9% (9-21) from 3-point range. The Badgers shot 55.6 (5-9) from the free-throw line. The team finished with 25 rebounds, 17 assists, 8 steals and 5 blocks.

South Dakota State went 46.5% (20-43) from field-goal range, including 58.3% (7-12) from behind the arc. The Jackrabbits were 81.0% (17-21) from the free-throw line. Brooklyn Meyer led South Dakota State with 19 points (6-11 FG, 7-10 FT), 11 rebounds and five blocks.
