Holloway, Kunin notch career milestones
MADISON, Wis. — Former Badgers around the NHL have been dominating headlines lately as the 2022-23 NHL season begins to ramp up.
Joe Pavelski became the Badger's all-time leading scorer in the NHL when he tallied his 949th point, surpassing three-time Stanley Cup Champion Chris Chelios.
Pavelski, a member of Wisconsin's 2006 national championship team, is in his 17th NHL season and fourth year with the Dallas Stars. His record-breaking point came as an assist in the Stars' 5-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 1. Pavelski has 10 goals and 29 points in 30 games played this season.
Dylan Holloway also reached a major career milestone. The 2020 Edmonton Oilers first-round draft pick found the back of the net on NHL ice for the first time, netting the game-tying goal in the Oiler's 4-3 win over the New York Rangers on Nov. 26.
Holloway, who spent two seasons at Wisconsin from 2019-21, made his NHL debut with Edmonton in the final game of the 2021 Western conference finals against the Colorado Avalanche, who would go on to win the Stanley Cup. In 26 games this season, Holloway logs consistent minutes among some of the NHL's top talent in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. He has one goal and three assists for four points.
Former Badger captain Luke Kunin scored his 100th NHL point with a goal against the Vegas Golden Knights on Nov. 15. He also tallied his first career three-point game, notching a trio of assists in San Jose's 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 21.
Kunin was traded to San Jose over the summer after two seasons with the Nashville Predators. He racked up five goals for 13 points in 31 games with the Sharks so far this season.
Cole Caufield, now in the midst of his third season with the Montreal Canadiens, continues to prove his dominance as an elite goal scorer. The 2021 Hobey Baker recipient has four goals in his last five games and averages near a point per game with 16 goals and 25 points in 29 games played. His 16 goals rank him among the top-16 goal scorers in the league.
Trent Frederic and the Boston Bruins currently enjoy the first-place slot in the NHL standings. Frederic has six goals and 11 points in 25 games this season, while Smith has been battling through injury.
So far this season, 14 Badgers have played in the NHL.
