Close game, Badgers ultimately topped

Gilreath makes last second three, Badgers fall by one

MADISON, WIS.- A tough fought game ultimately led to the Badgers falling to the Cornhuskers early Saturday afternoon. The final score was 71-72.

Trailing by two at the half, a third quarter surge by Wisconsin got the team up over Nebraska. The Badgers went on a 15-3 run to outscore the Cornhuskers 21-9 in that quarter.

Imani Lewis commented on the game but remained focused on the present. "We can't dwell on the past," she said. "We can just dwell on what is in front of us right now, and for me, my mentality is that I'm always going to be physical, that's just how I play."

In the first half, Lewis hit 12 points, marking her 10th game in a row scoring 10 more points. She finished the game leading Wisconsin with 21 points, her fourth time this season scoring over 20.

Lewis was followed by Abby Laszewski, who knocked down 14 points and also led the team in rebounds with nine. Her one block of the game moved her into a tie for sixth place with 110 career blocks.

Suzanne Gilreath was the third and final Badger to score in double-digits with 11 after making a last-second three. She went three for five shooting threes.

Wisconsin outrebounded Nebraska defensively and had a higher make percentage both from in the paint and behind the arc. As compared to the earlier meeting between the two teams, head coach Jonathan Tsipis said, "When you look at the two games, we played much better." He continued, "I'm proud of how we battled. I think we are right there."

Leigha Brown led Nebraska in scoring with 20 points. She was followed by Kate Cain, Sam Haiby and Ashtyn Verbeek, all with 11 points. Verbeek led the Cornhuskers in rebounds with nine.

Next up for the Badgers is a road trip to Bloomington to take on Indiana on Jan. 30, followed by another road game against Illinois on Feb. 2.
