Slambardo strikes in Texas

Senior leads Badgers past TSU and TAMUCC

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Wisconsin softball team went 2-0 on day two of the Islander Invitational Saturday. The Badgers (12-1) began their day with a 4-0 shutout of Texas Southern (0-6) before beating Texas A&M- Corpus Christi (2-12) by a score of 9-1.

TEXAS SOUTHERN
Game one was highlighted by lockdown pitching from junior ace Kaitlyn Menz. The Waukee, Iowa, native struck out 10 of the 20 batters she faced while only giving up one hit and no walks.

The Badgers got on the board in their first game of the day via a Stephanie Lombardo single to center field. She scored Jordan Little and Ally Miklesh who were on base from a walk and a single, respectively.

Junior Caroline Hedgcock added one more run in the third inning off of another single to center field for a 3-0 Wisconsin lead.

UW tallied one final run in the top of the fourth inning. Taylor Johnson homered for the third time this season to secure the 4-0 victory.

TEXAS A&M- CORPUS CHRISTI
Lombardo kept the good times rolling in game two against TAMUCC when she sent a long ball over the center field wall for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Badgers put up another pair of runs in the third inning and sixth inning before sealing the deal in the top of the seventh.

Back-to-back singles from Little and Miklesh put two runners on to start the inning and the Badgers loaded the bases when Kayla Konwent was hit by a pitch. Melanie Cross cleared the bases with a double to left center, extending the lead to 9-1.

The pitching duo of Haley Hestekin and Maddie Schwartz allowed eight hits but were able to minimize the Islanders' scoring opportunities. Hestekin earned the win after going five innings with no runs and one strike out.
