Post-Match Quotes

Coach Pete Waite

On having Caroline (Workman) and Bailey (Reshel) step up:
"It's extremely important. I thought Caroline was certainly tough and that was great, and then Bailey got in there and took some pretty good swings. The things I look at was that we outblocked them 14-7 and that's pretty huge. We out-dug them.

"Offensively, they were slightly ahead of us, but Alexis really turned it on late, Crystal (Graff) was doing great before she got hurt, Ellen (Chapman) had a big night. (There were) a lot of good things to take from it.

"Obviously, it's a little frustrating to just let them slip away at the end. And that is where we need to be more solid, more solid passing, blocking, everything. They've got some great players on that team. (Ashley) Wittman's hard to stop, she had a big night. (Katherine) Harms we kept down, 13 kills and 11 errors. That's one of their big guns. We did a lot of good things."

On what to take away from this match:
"I think we're doing all the right things. I think we are getting better all the time. Again, that's a top-15 team right there and we went five with them and just barely lost it. I think we are improving gradually along the way. If Crystal is able to play, great, if she's not, we have to have the next person come in and really stabilize things for us there in that spot."

On have a young team on the court and gaining experience:
"It's true. They are gaining so much experience out on the court right now it's phenomenal. Anne's (Hickey) game is so much more solid than last year; she is so much stronger. And these guys are going to make huge progress in the spring going into next fall. But we don't want to look to the future, we want these things now. We want these things bad. They are going to get more and more hungry every time we miss one of these close ones until we start winning some"

On the upcoming game against Indiana:
"We know they're a dangerous team, especially at home. They're well-coached, they do some nice things. We have to come out and play the same ball we've been playing. We can't back down a little bit, we can't go softer, we have to go after it. We will rest tomorrow, and then get back in the gym on Friday and get after them on Saturday."

Freshman outside hitter Ellen Chapman

On her role as a defensive player in the match:
"I just think whenever I play back row, I have to step it up because I'm given the chance to. I think that going for every ball is important and just calming myself before the serve since they always serve to me."

On their young team playing potential:
"I'm just so excited for the next three years because we are only going to improve."

Sophomore libero Annemarie Hickey

On how important the block is for her back row play:
"I think our blockers did a great job and they took a lot of risks, jumping in cross because that is (Wittman)'s favorite shot. I think that they do a really great job communicating to me."

On their young team playing potential:
"I think it's good that we are a young team. We have so many good players that came in, like Courtney (Thomas), Ellen and Crystal, and they are key people to our team. They are playing really great and they're stepping up in their roles.

"That's what we want as freshmen come in, we don't want them to be scared. We want them to play at their highest level. They adjusted to the play of volleyball in college really well and just playing as a team is really helping us. It's showing that even though we are young, we are a really good team and we're going to be good for the next years to come."
