MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin softball team ended its 2010 season with an 11-3, six-inning loss to Michigan State on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Diamond. The Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings and tacked on six more in the sixth inning to end the game via the run rule.

Michigan State got on the board early as Lindsey Hansen drilled a two-run home run to left field, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin had a chance to answer back in the bottom of the inning after loading the bases with one out, but a groundout and flyout ended the inning before UW could score.

The Spartans added to their lead in the second.

Michigan State loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second, but it looked like Wisconsin was going to work out of the jam as relief pitcher Meghan Mcintosh recorded back-to-back strikeouts. Unfortunately for UW, Hansen grounded a single to right field to knock in two runs.

Wisconsin battled back in the fourth inning, plating two runs with two outs in the inning.

Junior Dana Rasmussen drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single up the middle by fellow junior, Ashley Hanewich. A sacrifice by junior Jennifer Krueger moved the runners to second and third with two outs. With senior Katie Soderberg at the plate, Rasmussen scored the first Badger run on a passed ball. Soderberg then came through with an RBI single up the middle to bring home Hanewich and cut the Spartan lead in half to 4-2.

Michigan State scored a fifth run in the top of the fifth, but UW responded with a run in the bottom of the frame.

Freshman Shannel Blackshear led off with a single and was then pinch run for by freshman Abby Gregory. Freshman Whitney Massey then reached on an error as her bunt attempt was thrown away by Michigan State pitcher Lauren Kramer. Gregory moved to third on the play and then came around to score on Olivarez’ single to left field.

Michigan State added six runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. The big blow came on Jayme O’Bryant’s grand slam to left field.
