MADISON, Wis. - In the second game of its doubleheader at Goodman Wednesday afternoon, Wisconsin rallied in the bottom of the sixth to beat Northern Illinois, 4-3. Finding themselves in a 3-1 deficit, the Badgers scored three runs to take the lead.
Leading off the inning for the Badgers, Molly Spence singled and then stole second. Ashley Hanewich then flew out to right, and Karla Powell followed, grounding out to second and moving Spence to third.
With two outs, Dana Rassmusen smacked a single to left center, sending Spence home and cutting into Wisconsin's deficit, 3-2. Kendall Grimm then singled up the middle, advancing Rasmussen to second.
Letty Olivarez then nailed a triple to deep center, scoring two Badger runs and putting Wisconsin in the lead, 4-3.
Olivarez entered in relief and earned the win, pitching the final inning and two-thirds, striking out two while giving up zero hits.
The game passed scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Badgers scored the first run of the game.
Soderberg led off with a triple to deep center. After two consecutive outs, Spence came up to bat, singling to left center and bringing Soderberg home.
Northern Illinois scored three runs and took the lead in the top of the fifth.
The Huskies loaded the bases with two outs. Michelle Williams then hit a single to left center, scoring two runs and putting Northern Illinois up 2-1. Jennifer Barnett then singled to right, sending one more Husky home.
Freshman Meghan Mcintosh pitched five and one-third innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out two.
Soderberg went two-for-three on the game and scored one run from the leadoff spot. Spence and Rasmussen both went one-for-two, scoring one run and one RBI each, while Olivarez went one-for-two, notching two RBI.
The Badgers continue game action at Goodman Diamond Wednesday, April 20, as they end their homestand with a doubleheader against South Dakota. Game time is set for 3 p.m. (CT).
