MADISON, Wis. - In the second game of its doubleheader against Iowa at Goodman Diamond Wednesday, Wisconsin suffered a tough five-inning 14-1 loss. The sole Badger run came in the bottom of the fifth, as freshman Massey drove home senior Katie Soderberg.
Soderberg reached on an infield single then advanced to second on a passed ball. After Jennifer Krueger struckout swinging, Massey hit a deep single up the middle, scoring Soderberg.
Iowa opened the first with a two-run double, moving ahead of the Badgers.
The Badgers were unable to score in the first, and the Hawkeyes came back in the second scoring a single home run. Iowa then loaded the bases, scoring two more runs and making it 4-0. Senior Badger Katie Soderberg made a good defensive play, throwing out a Hawkeye runner at home, but Iowa tallied one more run, ending the inning 5-0.
The Badgers had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second, loading the bases but they were unable to bring in a run.
With one out, Karla Powell singled to right center. Dana Rasmussen struck out, but Kendall Grimm singled on a bunt to move Powell to second. Ashley Hanewich loaded the bases, reaching on an error, but the inning ended with a strikeout.
Iowa scored nine more runs in the top of the fourth, making it 14-0.
The Badgers will stay home this weekend as they take on Purdue Saturday, April 17, and Sunday, April 18. Both games are set for 1 p.m. (CT) at Goodman Diamond.
