STILLWATER, Okla. - The Badger softball team ended the Mizuno Classic with a 3-2 record, trumping Prairie View A&M, 10-2 in five innings, in its last game of the tournament, Sunday morning. Senior Katie Soderberg and freshman Molly Spence each slammed a home run in the bottom of the fourth en route to the win.
Spence's home run was her second of the weekend and fourth of the season, while Soderberg's homer marked her first of the season. The Badgers have now tallied 11 home runs on the year, after hitting 12 all of last season.
Eight different Badgers scored a run in the win, including two each for Spence and sophomore Karla Powell.
Like in the prior matchup when Wisconsin scored four runs in the first inning to won 13-1, the Badgers started the scoring on Sunday right off the bat in the first inning.
Junior Jennifer Krueger drew a leadoff walk and then stole two bases. Freshman Kendall Grimm was then walked as well and freshman Shannel Blackshear reached on an error, loading the bases. After Spence was called on strikes, freshman Whitney Massey hit a two-run single to shallow center, making the score 2-0, Wisconsin.
With still only one out on the inning, Powell reached after getting hit by a pitch, bringing senior pitcher Letty Olivarez up to bat with the bases loaded. Olivarez hit an RBI single to right field, bringing in another run and putting the Badgers up 3-0.
With the bases still loaded, Soderberg was walked, making the score 4-0 Wisconsin. With Kruger up to bat for the second time in the inning, the ball got away from catcher Lauren Grun, allowing Powell to make it home for the Badgers' fifth run.
After the Lady Panthers homered in the top of the second inning, Massey hit an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to make it 6-1, Badgers.
Prairie View A&M added a second run in the top of the fourth, but Wisconsin responded again, putting up four in the bottom of the fourth.
Spence started off the half-inning by nailing a solo home run to left field and extending her hitting streak to 13 games. After a flyout, Powell walked and junior Dana Rasmussen reached on an error, setting the stage for Soderberg.
Soderberg nailed a towering three-run home run off the scoreboard in right field, putting Wisconsin up 10-2. Soderberg's homerun was her first of the season.
Three pitchers combined for UW to give up just three hits and two earned runs over five innings.
Olivarez pitched the first two innings, giving up just one hit and one earned run to go with four strikeouts. Junior Kristyn Hansen pitched the next two innings, giving up two hits and one earned run, while striking out two.
Freshman Meghan Mcintosh got the final three outs as she struck out two and walked one.
On the weekend, Wisconsin notched six home runs: two from Spence, two from Powell, one from freshman Shannel Blackshear, and one from Soderberg.
On the weekend, the Badgers won their first game against Rutgers 6-2 Friday afternoon, but then fell to No. 19/20 Oklahoma State, 9-1, Friday night. Wisconsin defeated Prairie View A&M, 13-1, Saturday morning, before dropping an 8-5 contest to Rutger Saturday night.
The Badgers hit the road again on March 24, when they travel to the Cornhusker State to take on Nebraska in a doubleheader.
