STILLWATER, Okla. -- In its second day at the 2010 Mizuno Classic in Stillwater, Okla., Wisconsin reigned victorious over Prairie View A&M on Saturday morning 13-1. Freshmen Shannel Blackshear and Molly Spence each homered while driving in four and three runs, respectively.
It was Wisconsin's most runs scored since beating East Tennessee State, 14-5, on March 3, 2007. It was also the team's largest margin of victory since defeating Northern Colorado, 17-0, on Feb. 23, 2007.
UW scored four runs in the first, two each in the second and third innings and five runs in the fourth.
The Badgers wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning.
First up, junior Jennifer Krueger was walked. She then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jordan Skinner then reached on a fielder's choice as Kruger beat the throw home, scoring Wisconsin's first run.
Blackshear doubled on a screamer to right field, sending Skinner home and putting the Badgers up 2-0. Spence then nailed her third home run of the season to center field, brining Blackshear home and making it 4-0 Wisconsin. Spence's hit extended her hitting streak to 11 games.
The Badgers scored two more in the bottom of the second when sophomore Karla Powell and freshman Kendall Grimm each had RBI singles.
Blackshear had her second double of the game in the bottom of the third, driving in the seventh run for the Badgers.Spence followed with a double of her own to knock in Blackshear and put Wisconsin ahead 8-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Badgers scored four more runs.
Seeing game action for the first time this season, junior Dana Rasmussen doubled to left and then advanced to third on a fielding error by the left fielder. Two Wisconsin runners scored on the play, putting the Badgers up 10-1.
Blackshear hit a line drive home run to center later in the inning, tallying two more runs on the play to make it 13-1 Badgers.
Making her second start of the season, junior Kristyn Hansen pitched a complete game as she gave up just one hit and one unearned run in five innings of work. She also struck out three batters and walked four, improving to 1-0 on the season.
The Badgers return to action on Saturday. The team plays at either 4:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. (CT), depending on the outcome of the Oklahoma State-Rutgers matchup.
