Five Things to Know: Badgers open season at JT Poston Invitational

Waynesville, N.C. — The Wisconsin men's golf team will kick off their fall season at Waynesville Inn and Golf Club for the 2026 JT Poston Invitational where they look to start off their 2026-27 campaign strongly.Â
The Badgers will play three rounds from Sept. 13-15, competing with 15 other Division I schools at the event including Elon, South Carolina and Virginia Tech. Tee times begin each day at 8 a.m. CT off of tees 1 and 10.Â
1. Last Time Out: UW last competed on May 3, 2026, in the Big Ten Championships in Oregon where they tied for 16th place out of 18 competing teams. Graduated senior Spencer Turtz led the Badgers with a 29th place finish in the tournament.Â
2. The Course: The Waynesville Inn and Golf Club was built on a dairy farm in 1926 and is celebrating its 100th year for this year's JT Poston invitational. The 18 hole course is about 6,500 yards with a par 70 spread. Historically, the resort operated as a 27-hole property consisting of three separate 9-hole courses, but because the three loops lacked a cohesive flow, the property underwent a massive top-to-bottom master renovation spearheaded by Bobby Weed Golf Design. Weed consolidated the 27 disjointed holes into a high-caliber single 18-hole course that stands today.
3. The Tournament: The JT Poston Invitational was founded by Western Carolina University in 2004 and originally called the WCU Intercollegiate. It was only changed to the JT Poston Invitational in 2019 to honor one of WCU's greatest golfers. In a brilliant nod to Poston's PGA Tour nickname, "The Postman," the tournament features one of the most unique trophies in college sports: a purple mailbox with the WCU Catamount logo. The Badgers will be looking to take that home this weekend.Â
4. The Field: In the lineup this weekend for the Badgers is Joseph Gutierrez, Charlie Erlandson, Cody Guetzke, Jason Shwartz, William Harned, with Vijay Kumar golfing as an individual. Teams competing include Western Carolina, Drexel, Elon, Francis Marion, Jacksonville, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee, NC State, South Carolina, Southern Mississippi, UT-Rio Grande Valley, Virginia Tech, and Wofford. This young Badger team led by Jason Schwartz will try to start the season off strong with a good showing competing against some top competition.Â
