UW allows 16 runs in series finale
The Badgers' (14-10, 0-3 B1G) bats got back into a rhythm early versus the Bruins (21-3, 3-0 B1G), as junior Alivia Bark barreled a two-RBI double to the opposite field to put UW up 2-0.
UCLA responded right away, as the Big Ten's top offense tallied four runs in the first frame to take the lead back.Â
After a leadoff single by sophomore Kaylie Whidden in the second, fellow sophomore Hannah Conger provided a two-run blast to tie the game up at 4-4—marking Conger's second home run of the season. The Badgers added two more runs in the frame, as junior Danielle Lucey continued to produce from the middle of the order—plating a pair to give Wisconsin the 6-4 advantage.Â
The Bruins maintained the momentum on the offensive end, turning in seven unanswered runs to jump out to an 11-6 lead. UCLA blasted two home runs in the process, hitting multiple two or more long balls for the ninth consecutive game.Â
Freshman Berritt Herr came on in the third to silence the Bruins' bats. With the bases loaded, the right-hander retired three-straight batters to allow zero runs.Â
In the fourth, UW created a rally with a three-run frame to cut the deficit to 11-9. Junior Hilary Blomberg notched her first home run on the road trip, turning in a two-run homer after a leadoff walk from senior Emily Bojan. Whidden capped it off with an infield single, driving in one run en route to the first multi-hit game of her collegiate career.Â
The UCLA offense continued to make their presence felt, as Alexis Ramirez barreled a grand slam in the fourth inning to extend the advantage to 15-9.Â
Both lineups fell quiet for the rest of the game, as UCLA tallied one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure a sweep over the Badgers to kick off conference play.Â
