Badgers sit tied for seventh after day one
STATESBORO, Ga. – Wisconsin men's golf began its second-leg of the team's spring season this Friday, currently sitting tied for seventh after the opening round of the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Golf Course in Statesboro, Ga.
UW shot +2 as a team, competing in a field of 15 that features two fellow Big Ten foes in Maryland and Indiana.
Leading the way for UW was graduate Jacob Beckman, who had just one bogey in a 69-stroke round. Beckman went under-70 for the first time this spring after doing so twice during the fall.
Sophomores Jason Shwartz (+1) and Charles Erlandson (+2) each went bogey-less on the back nine, with Erlandson collecting three birdies in that stretch. Senior Spencer Turtz matched Erlandson with a +2.
Shwartz is following up a top-15 finish at the Badgers' last event - the Puerto Rico Classic.
Rounding out the Badgers was independent Vijay Kumar, who went +3, and sophomore Drew Sacia, who went +5. Both of them made their spring debut in Round 1.
It'll be Sacia who starts things off for the Badgers tomorrow in Round 2, teeing off at 8:02 a.m. CT in a staggered start. UW then competes in Round 3 the following day on March 15.
