Wisconsin’s 400 medley relay team tied the school record
MADISON, Wis. — The No. 24 Wisconsin men's swim and dive team finished strong on the third day of competition at the Big Ten Championships in Madison.
Junior Nathan Welker broke the school record in the 100 back three separate times across the day, helping Wisconsin (569.5 points) to hold steady in fourth. No. 6 Indiana sits in first place with 1061.5 points, as No. 4 Michigan and No. 11 Ohio State round out the top three.
How it happened:
In the morning's preliminary session, Welker set the tone by breaking the school record in the 100 back in 45.47 seconds. The junior put up a strong performance in the event's consolation finals, dropping five hundredths of a second to break his own school record.
Welker led off in Wisconsin's 400 medley relay team in the 100 back split to close out the night, shaving off seven hundredths of a second more to break the school record again. Helped by Welker's time, the relay team tied the school record in 3:05.03 for a fifth-place finish.
Four Badgers placed in the A finals on the night, as Dominik Mark Torok led the charge in the 200 breast for a seventh-place finish in 1:53.10. The time marks a lifetime best for the senior by over two seconds, and a top-two all-time finish at UW.
Freshman Enzo Solitario earned a sixth-place finish in the 500 free in 4:14.02, shaving two seconds off his previous lifetime best. The time also marks a top-six all-time finish at UW. 12. Yoav Romano, Charlie Jones and Miles Cratsenberg put up strong finishes in the event's consolation finals, earning a 12th, 16th and 18th place finish, respectively.
Ben Wiegand and Cooper Scharff closed out the individual events with sixth and seventh-place finishes in the 50 free. Wiegand's finish in 19.21 ties the top-two all-time finish at UW.
The Badgers return for the final day of competition tomorrow with the 200 IM, 100 free, 200 fly, 200 back, 1,650 free and platform diving. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. (CT), with the distance event at 3:15 (CT) and finals at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
