Wisconsin looks to improve on sixth place finish
MADISON, Wis. — The No. 24 Wisconsin men's swim and dive team kick off postseason competition at the Big Ten Championships from Wednesday to Saturday in Madison at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.
The Wednesday session will kick off at 4 p.m., as preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and finals start at 5:30 p.m. for each following day.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Alongside the No. 24 Badgers, five other Big Ten schools fall in the Top 25 of the CSCAA poll. The men rank sixth among conference foes, with No. 3 Indiana coming out on top. Ohio State, Michigan State, USC and Northwestern rank 11th, 12th, 15th and 19th, respectively, heading into conference championships.
A LOOK BACK AT LAST YEAR
Last year, the Wisconsin men placed sixth overall with 735 points. The Indiana Hoosiers won for their fourth consecutive season, collecting 1579 points across the week. Michigan and Ohio state rounded out the top three finishers, with 1148 and 1100 points. The 200 free relay team of Taiko Torepe-Ormsby, Cooper Scharff, Ben Wiegand and Chris Morris highlighted the meet for the Badgers, garnering a silver medal and a new school record for the Badgers.
B1G LEADERS
Senior Dominik Mark Torok leads the Badgers with a top-three time in the 200 fly this season when slated against Big Ten competitors. Torok set a personal best and school record in the event at the Texas Invitational earlier this season, finishing in 1:40.07. The senior also holds the fifth-fastest 400 IM time of 3:40.21. Senior Ben Wiegand checks in at fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a school record of 51.83 and seventh in the 50 free with 19.39. Sophomore Yoav Romano sits fourth in the 1650 free in 14:54.42 and sixth in the 500 free in 4:14.00. Freshman Enzo Solitario currently sits sixth in the 200 free in 1:33.16. Nathan Welker and Adam Graham sit eighth in the backstroke events, with Welker checking in at 45.79 in the 100 back and Graham in 1:41.07 in the 200 back.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following the Big Ten Championships, the Badgers will head down to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in the NCAA Championships on March 25-28. Last year, Wisconsin sent nine Badgers to compete, including Torok, Wiegand, Romano, Luukas Vainio, Charlie Jones and Cooper Scharff.
