Kloesters reaches quarterfinals at ITA Midwest Regional Championships

Eight Badgers wrap up competition at ITA Regionals
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Wisconsin men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Columbus on Monday.
In singles play, junior Ferdinand Kloesters reached the quarterfinals after taking down Ohio State freshman Denis Petak in the Main Draw Round of 16. Petak sits at No. 96 in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings and No. 11 in the newcomer poll. Kloesters then fell to Ohio State's Brandon Carpio in straight sets in the quarterfinals.
Kloesters earned a pair of straight-sets victories to reach the Round of 16, opening the tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Western Michigan's Oscar Corwin before taking down Illinois' Colson Wells 6-2, 6-2, in the Round of 32. Meszaros also reached the Round of 16, defeating Illinois' David Bakonyi 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 64 before sweeping his UIC opponent in the Round of 32. He ultimately fell to Notre Dame's Kyran Magimay in three sets.
In addition to Kloesters and Meszaros, three other Badgers picked up wins in the Round of 64 on Saturday. Junior Edouard Aubert cruised past his Michigan opponent in straight sets before falling to No. 27 Alex Okonkwo of Ohio State in the next round. Junior Sachiv Kumar and senior Tomas Zlatohlavek both earned gritty three-set match wins in the first round, but fell after a tiebreaker in the Round of 32.
In the qualifying singles draw, freshman Jens Holger Nissen went 2-0 to earn his spot in the main draw. The freshman earned three set victories over Cleveland's Tristan Stine and Western Michigan's Filip Poklemba.
Aubert and Zlatohlavek earned the sole doubles win for Wisconsin, advancing to the Round of 32 thanks to an 8-4 victory over Youngstown State's duo. The pair then fell to Ohio State's Brandon Carpico and Alex Fuchs, 8-5, in the Round of 32.
