No. 1 Badgers sweep Mavericks, move to 10-0-0

Eight different Badgers score in shutout win over MSU

MADISON, Wis — The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team shutout Minnesota State Mankato 8-0 during game two of the home series this Sunday. Eight Badgers scored once to shutout the Mavericks and earn Wisconsin its fifth straight series sweep.

Hannah Halverson scored her first goal of the season after receiving the puck from captain Caroline Harvey. The sophomore forward celebrated her birthday by giving Wisconsin its first score on the board.

Minutes later, alternate captain Lacey Eden tipped one in for Wisconsin and scored her seventh goal of the season, putting the Badgers up 2-0. Junior alternate captain Kelly Gorbatenko found the back of the net with 8:06 remaining in the first, collecting her fourth goal in the last three games.

A trio of Badgers found themselves in front of Mankato's net to close out the first period of play. Maggie Scanell and Gorbatenko passed the puck back and forth to Cassie Hall, before Hall ultimately scored for Wisconsin. The scoreboard read 4-0 when the clock struck zero. Hall's goal was her 10th in 10 games played.

Senior Claire Enright scored first for the Badgers during the second period and brought Wisconsin up 5-0. Scannell collected her fifth goal of the season after receiving the puck from Gorbatenko with 10:11 remaining in the second period.

The three linemates of Gorbatenko, Hall and Scannell combined for three goals and three assists on the day

Freshman goaltender Rhyah Stewart entered the net with 14:33 remaining in the final period. Stewart has now played in two games for Wisconsin.

Freshman Adéla Šapovalivová tallied her second goal of the series at the start of the third period, making the Badgers 7-0. Soon after, sophomore Finley McCarthy found the back of the net after receiving a pass from senior Vivian Jungels. This was McCarthy's first goal of the season, making the final score 8-0.

Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the team's fast start to the game:

"I thought the first period was a really good start. We were a little short handed tonight but we got off to a good start. The second period was a good learning opportunity for everyone involved, so it was a good overall game. Eight different people scored, which was a very positive sign as well. We [focused] on learning from yesterday afternoon's game, and some of the things we know needed to do to have success against them. We were looking for a fast us, and we got that, which helped us to end up winning the game."

Kelly Gorbatenko
On the player of her line:

"I think that just shows our ceiling and I think those goals were a glimpse of it. We just have so much potential, climbing everyday to get there. We've been practicing since the beginning of the summer together and we're just starting to really get there.

Ava McNaughton
On facing an up-tick in shots:

"It's fun to be busy, it keeps you in it. It's easier to stay in it when you face more shots. They had a lot of good opportunities, so I was glad to come up with an answer for them.

Notes of the Game
  • Wisconsin has only let in six goals through the team's first 10 games. In program history, only the 2015-16 team let in fewer goals during the team's first 10 games.

  • This is the third season in a row in which the Badgers opened their season 10-0-0, and the fourth time in the last five seasons.

  • The Badgers have seven shutouts through ten games, the most of any team in the nation

  • The last time eight different Badgers scored in a game was an 11-0 victory over Bemidji State on 3/1/25
