Wisconsin drops series to Northwestern

Badgers defeated by Wildcats, 69-43

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Wisconsin women's basketball team (10-11, 3-8 B1G) lost to the Northwestern Wildcats (8-14, 3-8 B1G), Sunday, Feb. 4 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. Serah Williams notched her eighth consecutive double-double to tie Theresa Huff at No. 1 all-time in consecutive double-doubles in program history, but her 11 point, 11 rebound performance was not enough to overcome Northwestern.

The Wildcats got off to a quick start against the Badgers, initiating a 9-0 run to get the game going. Williams and Ronnie Porter responded with six unanswered points to put the Badgers within three, but Northwestern remained aggressive on offense. NU dropped four more buckets to finish off the quarter, leading UW 19-9 after the first ten minutes.

Wisconsin trailed by as many as 16 points in the second quarter, down 25-9 with 6:58 to go before the half, but the momentum arrow soon shifted in the Badgers' favor. D'Yanis Jimenez got Wisconsin going with a long two and Tessa Grady capped off the run with her signature move, the deep corner three. The Badgers looked hungry for the comeback, and continued to find more responses to the Wildcats' offense. Williams made her way to the line and Ronnie Porter concluded Wisconsin's scoring with a driving layup to trim Northwestern's lead down to 31-23 at half.

The second half was similar to the first quarter, with the Badgers struggling to score and the Wildcats finding their groove. Led by Caroline Lau, Northwestern delivered 38 second-half points as opposed to Wisconsin's 20 and ended up sweeping the series.

Wisconsin shot 25.8% (16-62) from the field range, and 15.4% (4-26) from 3-point range. The Badgers shot 58.3% (7-12) from the free-throw line.

Northwestern shot 43.3% (26-60) from field-goal range, including 35.7% (5-14) from behind the arc. The Wildcats were 80.0% (12-15). Caroline Lau was the game's leading scorer, as she notched 24 points (9-9 FG. 4-4 3FG, 2-2 FT) and never missed a shot.
