CANCUN, Mexico - The Wisconsin women's basketball team (5-2) suffered a 73-67 loss to San Diego State University (7-0) in their opening game of the Cancun Challenge on Thursday, Nov. 28, in Cancun, Mexico.
Serah Williams had a standout performance, recording a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double, the 27th of her career. She also tied her career high in blocks with 6.
Carter McCray also turned in a dominant showing, adding 9 points and 13 rebounds, while shooting 60% from the field.
As a team, Wisconsin shot 44.4% (24-54) from the field and 68.4% (13-19) from the free-throw line. Defensively, the Badgers held the Aztecs to 42.4% shooting (25-59) overall and 47.4% (9-19) from three-point range.
How it Happened
The game began with a back-and-forth exchange of baskets, as both teams battled for control. Over the course of the first quarter, the lead shifted seven times, with Wisconsin holding the advantage for more than 12 minutes. The Badgers came out strong in the second quarter, dominating both ends of the floor. They went on a 5-0 run, forced turnovers, and grabbed 18 rebounds in the first half. Despite Wisconsin's solid performance, San Diego State led 35-33 at the break.
The Aztecs extended their lead in the third quarter, finishing with a 12-point advantage. However, the Badgers fought back fiercely in the fourth, going on an impressive 17-0 run that shut down the Aztecs' offense for nearly 12 minutes.
