Five things to know: Men’s swimming heads to Big Tens

Newmark looks to defend title
MADISON, Wis. – The No.23 men's swimming and diving team opens championship season at the Big Ten Conference Championships on Wednesday-Saturday at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Two finals will be held on Wednesday, beginning at 4 p.m. CT. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT daily with finals following at 4 p.m. CT. The championship will be streamed live on B1G+.
Here are five things to know for this week.
1. THE B1G RETURN: The Badgers look to improve upon their 2022 finish at the Big Ten Championships after placing fourth with 869.5 points. No. 6 Indiana is the reigning champion with 1,449.5 points while No. 8 Ohio State finished second with 1,406.5 points. No. 17 Michigan took third with 1,056.5 points.
2. DEFENDING CHAMPION: Last year, Wisconsin had one swimmer crowned Big Ten Champion. Junior captain Jake Newmark looks to defend his title in the 500 free, after setting a pool record of 4:12.43 at Purdue's Boilermaker Aquatic Center back in 2022. Newmark was UW's first 500 free Big Ten champion since Matthew Hutchins won the event in 2015.
3. SCORING BADGERS: Wisconsin has multiple swimmers ranked in the top 24 heading into the Big Ten championships. Andrew Benson enters the 100 free ranked seventh while Newmark is ranked 17th. Defending champion Newmark enters the 200 free and 500 free ranked second in both events. Benson also enters the 200 free with a 10th-place ranking. Wes Jekel comes into the 200 back-seeded eighth with Cooper Scharff earning the 24th seed. Will Myhre leads UW in the 100 breast with a sixth-place seed, followed up by Matthew Segal in 15th and Truman teDuits in 20th. In the 400 IM, Dominik Mark Torok comes into the event with the seventh seed closely followed by Zach Ward in 12th.
4. DIVING RIGHT IN: Junior Daniel Muller enters Big Tens with a winning sweep, after claiming the 1-meter and 3-meter dives against Green Bay 10 days ago. Muller is UW's top seed heading into the meet, coming in at No. 10 on the 1-meter and 3-meter. Freshman Jan Lanser closely follows, seeded 17th on the 1-meter and 18th on the 3-meter.
