Gorniak, Urdahl net goals
MADISON, Wis. — Two Badgers found the back of the net against No. 17/14 Michigan State, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Spartans' early lead.
The Spartans (16-15-2, 10-11-2 1-1-2 Big Ten) took a 3-0 advantage over the Badgers in the first period and went on to claim a 6-2 victory over Wisconsin (11-20-0, 4-17-0 0-0-0 Big Ten).
After failing on a five-minute power play, Wisconsin allowed the first goal when Nicolas Muller connected with Jeremy Davidson and Erik Middendorf to sneak the puck past goaltender Kyle McClellan.
Zach Dubinsky then redirected a slapshot from Matt Basgall, assisted by Justin Jallen at 15:35.
David Gucciardi added to the tally at 18:47 when he connected with Jesse Tucker and Dubinsky to net a wrist shot from the slot
Wisconsin got on the board at 6:02 in the second period when fifth-year Jack Gorniak tipped freshman defenseman Tyson Jugnauth's shot past goaltender Dylan St. Cyr on the power play. Liam Malmquist battled for the puck on the boards in the Spartans' zone and passed to Charlie Stramel on the point. He set up Jugnauth on the blue line, who took a few strides before winding up for the shot (Note: the goal was changed to Jack Gorniak after the game).
Michigan State's Viktor Hurtig responded less than two minutes later, tapping in a cross-zone pass from Middendorf and Muller.
Zach Urdahl got a goal back for the Badgers at 9:08 when St. Cyr played the puck behind the net and Urdahl intercepted the pass. The sophomore beat the recovering goaltender to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Spartans restored their three-goal lead before the second period was over after Davidson ripped a shot from the top of the circle.
Jared Moe took over for McClellan in net midway through the second period.
Michigan State went up 6-2 on the power play at 11:44 in the third period. Jagger Joshua tapped in a rebound from Muller and Basgal.
Despite outshooting the Spartans 12-6 in the third period, the Badgers were unable to capitalize on any chances, falling to Michigan State 6-2.
