BOULDER, Colo. – Tough defense led the Wisconsin women's basketball team to a 60-45 win over Boise State in its opening game of the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic on Saturday afternoon. The win snapped the Badgers (2-4) four-game losing streak.
The Badgers zone defense gave the Broncos (1-4) trouble throughout the game, forcing an opponent season-high 20 turnovers. Wisconsin converted BSU's mistakes into 17 points. UW's tough defense recorded nine steals, including a game-high three from
Katie Nelson.
Boise State shot an opponent season-low 30.9 % (17-55), including just 19% (4-21) from 3-point range. Wisconsin shot 39.7% (23-58) from the field, including 33.3 (7-21) from behind the arc for a season-high triples.
Junior
Julie Pospisilova led all players with 15 points, netting three 3-pointers, while
Sydney Hilliard added 11 points, shooting 55% (5-9) from the field. Pospisilova had a great all-around game, tallying a career-high eight assists while adding a game-high seven rebounds and one block.
The Badger bench came through with 16 points with Wisconsin also outscored the Broncos 9-0 on fast-break points.
Wisconsin edged Boise State, 38-37, in rebounds while UW dished off 14 assists on 23 field goals, and turned the ball over only 12 times.
The Broncos held an early lead after the first quarter, 10-9, but the Badgers took control over the next two periods. BSU led 12-11 with 6:48 to play in the second before Wisconsin went on a 6-0 run, capped by a
Krystyna Ellew 3-pointer to put UW up 17-12. The Badgers led by as many as eight points (27-19) with 34 seconds remaining in the half but Boise State scored a last-second layup to make it 27-21 at the break.
In the second half, Wisconsin extended its lead to double figures (35-25) with 6:30 on the clock, a lead it wouldn't lose.
