MADISON, Wis. --
Despite coming back from a 17-point first quarter deficit to take a third-quarter lead, the Wisconsin women's basketball team couldn't keep its momentum going, falling in overtime to Chicago State, 71-63, on Monday night at the Kohl Center.
Early foul trouble and a fast-paced Chicago State (1-4) offense had the Badgers (1-3) trailing 21-7 after the first quarter. Head coach
Marisa Moseley made some line-up changes and switched up UW's defense, allowing the Badgers to outscore the Cougars 18-11 in the second quarter to trail 32-25 at the half.
A 10-0 run to end the half continued into the third quarter as Wisconsin outscored CSU 12-4 in the first six minutes to take a 37-36 lead off two
Julie Pospisilova free throws with 4:15 left in the period.
Pospisilova scored 11 points in the third frame, but when foul trouble caught up to the Czech Republic native, guard
Sydney Hilliard took over for the Badgers.
Wisconsin led 44-43 after three periods and a Hilliard bucket put the Badgers up 46-43 with 9:14 to play in regulation. UW led 50-49 with 1:38 remaining before the Cougars went 3-4 from the free-throw line to lead 52-50 with 59 seconds on the clock. Hilliard scored a clutch drive with 41 seconds remaining to tie the game at 52. The Badgers forced a turnover but couldn't convert on a last-second shot, sending the game into overtime.
Chicago State scored first in the extra period as the Badgers couldn't regain their mid-game form. The Cougars went 9-12 from the free-throw line in OT to secure the win.Â
For the game, Wisconsin went 24-36 (66.7%) from the charity stripe while CSU shot 68.8% (22-32). The Cougars hit 41.5% (22-53) from the field for the contest, including 35.7% (5-14) from 3-point range. The Badgers' shooting woes continue as they hit 30.9% (17-55) from the field, including 25% (5-20) from behind the arc.
Hilliard led the Badgers with 20 points while Pospisilova added 15 points. The Cougars' Aaliyah Collins led all scorers with 25 points, including 12 points in overtime.
Keeping up with the quick Cougar guard play meant extended playing time for Wisconsin's bench as sophomoresÂ
Lexi Duckett (30) and
Brooke Schramek (27) both tallied career-high minutes. Both Badgers took advantage of their extra court time with Duckett hitting two big 3-point shots during the Badger comeback and Schramek netting back-to-back buckets in the third period, both finishing with six points a piece.
The Badger defense forced 14 Cougar turnovers while scoring 11 points off takeaways. Wisconsin also outscored CSU 11-5 on second-chance points but outrebounded 39-34. Hilliard and Schramek both led UW with seven boards.
Guard
Katie Nelson rounded out the Wisconsin attack with eight points and a game-high five assists to lead the the Wisconsin pass game to 12 total assists compared to Chicago State's six. The Badgers also turned the ball over only 10 times while adding eight steals.
Notes to Know
- Sophomore Brooke Schramek tallied a career-high seven rebounds and three blocks, playing a career-best 27 minutes.
- Redshirt sophomore Lexi Duckett tied her career high with six points, shooting career highs of 2-5 from 3-point range. The guard also added career bests of two assists and one block in a career-high 30 minutes.
- Junior Julie Pospisilova shot 10-14 from the free-throw line for career highs.
- Wisconsin took a season-high 36 free throws, making 24. The Badgers also had a season-high five blocks while turning the ball over a season-low 10 times.

The Badgers hit the road for their next three games, kicking off their road trip with a contest at in-state rival Milwaukee on Wednesday. Tip off is 6 p.m. from the Klotsche Center with a live stream available on ESPN+. Wisconsin then travels to Boulder, Colorado, for the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic on Saturday and Sunday where it plays Boise State and host Colorado, respectively.
