LINCOLN, Neb. — Junior forward Imani Lewis notched her fourth consecutive double-double of the season but it wasn't enough as the Wisconsin women's basketball fell at Nebraska, 84-68, on Thursday night.
Wisconsin led 7-6 less than five minutes into the first quarter before the Huskers went on a 8-0 run to lead 14-7 with 1:32 on the clock. Nebraska led 20-11 after the first quarter and outscored the Badgers 23-16 in the second quarter to lead 43-27 at halftime. The Huskers led 66-46 after three quarters and led by as many as 26 points (74-48) early in the fourth quarter.
With Nebraska up 78-55 with 5:54 to play in the game, the Badgers went on an 11-0 run, including five points by Tara Stauffacher, to pull with 14 (78-64) with 3:34 on the clock. But that was as close as UW would get as Nebraska would match the Badgers basket-for-basket the rest of the game.
The Badgers struggled on offense all night, shooting 34.3% (23-67) from the field while Nebraska hit 54% (34-63). It was free throws that kept UW in the game as it shot 20-29 (69%) from the charity stripe as the Huskers were called for 21 fouls. Wisconsin was called for 12 fouls as Nebraska shot 11-13 (84.6%) from the line.
Lewis led the way for Wisconsin, finishing with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Sydney Hilliard added 16 points while Sara Stapleton chipped in 12 points. The Badgers missed sophomore Julie Pospisilova in the game as the point guard did not play due to injury. Freshman Halle Douglass earned her first start in the Cardinal and White. Douglass finished with two points, four rebounds and one assist.
Nebraska had five players score in double figures behind a game-high 24 points from Sam Haiby. The Huskers outscored UW 44-28 in the paint as three post players tallied double figures.
Wisconsin outrebounded the Huskers 41-37 and recorded a season-low seven turnovers, which ties for sixth on the UW single-game record list.The Badgers also outscored Nebraska 19-5 on second-chance points.
