Badgers ease past Hoosiers in series opener

Menz gives up just two hits in complete game shutout

MADISON, Wis. -- A windy day didn't phase Wisconsin softball as the Badgers got back into the win column in the first of three against Indiana on Friday, 5-0. Wisconsin (31-8 overall, 8-5 B1G) outhit the visiting Hoosiers (31-16 overall, 6-9 B1G), 8-2.

The Badgers struck first when Kayla Konwent sent out her 14th home run of the year to lead off the first inning.

Wisconsin held on to their 1-0 lead through the fourth inning when a Jordan Little double down the left-field line sent pinch runner Tyra Turner home and eventually brought Little around to third base.

Kayla Konwent and Taylor Johnson would come home in the fifth on a Stephanie Lombardo double that would be the end of the day for Indiana's Tara Trainer in the circle.

Already leading 4-0, a Taylor Johnson double brought in Little from second.

Junior Kaitlyn Menz picked up her 14th win of the season in her fifth complete game.

Batting clean-up: Four notes to know

  • Konwent hit her third leadoff homer of the season.

  • Foster recorded a team-high two hits and to extend her reached base streak to 17 games.
  • The Badgers outhit the Hoosiers 8-2.
  • Menz recorded seven strikeouts in her 14th win of the season.

Straight from the dugout

"She (Menz) was dominant. Indiana is a very good team, and I think it's going to be a battle the next two games. That's one of the best games I've seen her thrown since she's been at Wisconsin, and what a better time to do it against a team that's been ranked all year long and is one of the top teams in our conference and in the region. To put a zero up ever is a big deal, but especially against a really successful team like that is great."
