Badgers split games in Tampa

Konwent homers twice on first day of USF tournament

TAMPA, Fla. – The 20th-ranked Wisconsin softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase. The Badgers (18-3) began the day with an 8-0 run-rule shutout of Massachusetts (8-8) before falling to South Florida (15-9), 7-1.

Massachusetts
In the very first at-bat of the game, junior Kayla Konwent sent the ball flying over the center field wall for a lead the Badgers would never relinquish.

Wisconsin tacked on three more runs in the second inning, staring with a Kelly Welsh RBI off a UMass error. With the bases loaded, Konwent struck again with a two-RBI single up the middle.

Carrying a 4-0 lead heading into the fifth inning, the Badgers tallied four more runs in the frame to earn an 8-0 run rule shutout. After junior Caroline Hedgcock reached base with a leadoff double, fellow junior Jordan Little homered in the next at bat to score the pair.

USF tallied two outs but the inning continued with an Ally Miklesh single to bring Konwent to the plate. She ended the game just as she had started it, with a clutch home run.

Sophomore Haley Hestekin picked up the win the circle after pitching four innings with six strikeouts, no walks and no runs. Freshman Maddy Schwartz struck out one of the three batters she faced in the last inning of the game.

South Florida
After USF tallied a run in both the first and second innings, the Badgers fought back with a run in the third to get on the board.

Pinch runner Gabby Scherle stole second base just in time for Taylor Johnson to send her home. The sophomore scored Scherle via a single to center field.

Both offensive and defensive woes plagued the Badgers for the remainder of the game. USF was able to put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Batting clean-up: Four notes to know

  • Konwent hit 1.000 (4-4) with five RBI and two homers against UMass.
