Wisconsin displays dominance over Marquette in 5-2 win
MADISON, Wis. – The Badgers claimed a convincing win over fellow Wisconsin school Marquette on Thursday night at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Wisconsin men's tennis team knocked off the Golden Eagles by a score of 5-2.
The Badgers moved to 6-0 in the double's category on the season. It was the No. 2 tandem that got in on the action for Wisconsin though, changing what has been a recipe of clinches at the one and three-spot.
Sophomore Jesper Freimuth and freshman Lenard Soha combined to take down Marquette's pair Luek Smrek and Brett Meyers, 6-4. The fiery duo of junior Chase Colton and sophomore Robert Krill clinched the point for UW with a 6-3 win over Greg Anderson and Fran San Andres.
Senior captain Osgar O'Hoisin was the first in and first out on Thursday night. O'Hoisin cruised to a win at the No. 1 spot over Alvaro Verdu, 6-4, 6-1. Soha had ice in his veins, as he came through for the clinch, giving Wisconsin the fourth point of the match with a win over Brandon Shanklin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Westerman's Wing:
Head coach Danny Westerman
"We're fortunate to come away with the doubles point against Marquette. They are very talented, they hit the ball big. We were fortunate to come down with it. It was nice for that No. 2 team to come away with a win - the No. 1 and 3 spots have been really good all year. It really rolled into singles.
Credit to Soha. He struggled early but bounced back really nicely. It was cool for him to get that clinch as a freshman - that fourth point is a hard one to get. He really stepped up for our team."
Up Next: Wisconsin welcomes Green Bay to Madison on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
