Badgers unable to hang on to No. 11 Maryland

Wisconsin falls on the road, 75-57

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Wisconsin women's basketball team came out with confidence as they battled No. 11 Maryland on Thursday night, but was unable to hang on in the second half falling 75-57.

Wisconsin (11-11 overall, 2-8 BIG) contained Maryland (18-2, 7-2 BIG) in the first quarter with the Badgers jumping out to an early lead (4-2) at the 7:37 mark. The Terps captured the lead and extended it to six with a 3-pointer (15-9) with 3:45 left in the first. With six seconds to go, senior Kelly Karlis was fouled beyond the arc and sunk all three free-throws to come back within one point (19-18) at the end of the first.

UW came out for the second quarter the same confident way to regain the lead (20-19) at the 9:48 mark, but Maryland used four 3-pointers and outrebounded the Badgers to grab an eight-point lead at the half (35-27).

The Badgers used a 7-0 run at the 6:38 mark in the third quarter to come within five points of the Terps (39-34), but that was as close as it would get for the remainder of the game.

UW gave up 11 turnovers in the second half, eight in the third quarter alone, and brought Maryland to the line adding nine points for the Terps.

Maryland continued to shoot in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Badgers 23-16.

UW shot 36.5 percent from the lead (23-63) including 3-11 (27.3 percent) from beyond the arc and 72.7 percent (8-11) from the free-throw line. The Terrapins would shoot 49.2 percent (29-59) from the field as they would dominate from 3-point range shooting 7-12 (58.3 percent) and 10-13 (76.9 percent) from the charity stripe.

Freshman Imani Lewis led the Badgers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Senior Marsha Howard and senior Kelly Karlis also shot in double figures with 10 points each. Sophomore Niya Beverley added five assists while junior Kendra Van Leeuwen tallied four steals.

Maryland's Kaila Charles was hard to stop shooting a game-high 22 points for the Terps while Shakira Austin grabbed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Blair Watson also shot in double figures with 11 points.

The Terps outrebounded the Badgers 42-31 and outblocked the Badgers 6-3.

Straight from the court

"It is a game of runs and we have to be able to respond. It was 23-10 in the fourth before we hit a couple of threes in the end."

"As good of a job as we did in the first half, I thought in transition in the second half they hurt us. We did not get matched up and we brought them to the free-throw line."

"We got contributions from our players. Kelly had 10 points in the first half, Niya had nine points and five assists in the second half, and Marsha got behind the zone and did some really good things."
