Wisconsin marches out to a 2-0 start with convincing win over Northern Illinois
MADISON, Wis. – The Badgers continued right where they left off on Friday night as the Wisconsin men's tennis team wowed the home crowd a 6-1 win over Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
The Badgers move to 2-0 in team doubles on the year, with impressive performances at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
Senior Osgar O'Hoisin and Jared Pratt finished first, earning a 6-3 win over NIU'S Eric Marbach and Kris Ortega. The German tandem of sophomore Jesper Freimuth and freshman Lenhard Soha were right on their heels, winning over Victor Spolidorio and Mikko Malinen, 6-3.
In singles, there were too many impressive performances to count, as the Cardinal and White collected five of six singles matches, including at the No. 2 singles slot as Freimuth clinched the match for the Badgers.
Westerman's Wing:
Head coach Danny Westerman
"We were ready to go again in doubles. I think the guys understand the importance of the doubles point and how it can set the tone for the match.
All around, can't complain about a win like this. We had to step up in some key moments today, but I think that's going to pay dividends for these young guys."
Up Next: Wisconsin welcomes Chicago State to the Nielsen on Wednesday, Feb. 6 for another home dual. First serve is at 5:30 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 30 but was postponed.
