Heartbreak at home

Wisconsin puts up impressive fight against No. 15 Fordham in 1-0 loss

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's soccer team put up a heck of a fight against No. 15 Fordham, but ultimately fell in double-overtime, 1-0, to the Rams on Saturday night at McClimon Soccer Complex.

Wisconsin (1-2) and Fordham (2-0) played 100 minutes without a score. Fordham got their golden chance in the 101st minute off a set piece. The Rams' Johannes Pieles snuck behind the defense on the free kick and sent a header to the lower left corner of the net.

The Badgers dominated possession all night, with a 13-6 shot advantage to illustrate. Fordham led Wisconsin in corner kicks 9-4.

Straight from the pitch:
Head coach John Trask

"We knew that Fordham is not only well coached but that they are a very good team. You can see how they made a deep run in the NCAA tournament. They pulled off a play that could've gone either way, but that's what makes top NCAA teams that are going to be there in the end. You hate to say that there is anything good that comes from a loss but this type of game is what we need to get ready for the Big Ten. There are no easy games in college soccer and this was a very difficult one tonight. That's why we brought Fordham here. We knew they were going to be good and that they have some very good players and a very good team. I thought it was an excellent collegiate soccer game. There was quality on both sides. They got us on a play and sometimes you have to tip your hat to a play they made to get the game winning goal."

Up Next: Wisconsin hits the pitch for another home match on Monday when it takes on Valparaiso at 2:30 p.m. (CT) at McClimon Complex.
