GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The No. 16 Wisconsin men's hockey team could not slow an offensive frenzy from No. 14 North Dakota, falling 5-0 to the Fighting Hawks Friday night at Engelstad Arena.Â
North Dakota (3-2-1, 0-0-0-0 NCHC) raced out to an early 1-0 lead three minutes into the first period when UND senior forward Rhett Gardner finished off a 2-on-1 centering pass past UW (4-3-0, 0-0-0-0 B1G) netminder
Jack Berry to give the Fighting Hawks the lead.Â
Despite outshooting the Hawks 8-7 in the opening frame, UND freshman Jacob Bernard-Docker extended the Hawks' lead over the Badgers to 2-0 with a tally from the circle to round out first period scoring.Â
UND snuck another pair of goals behind Berry in the second period to make it a 4-0 game, including one shot that was headed well wide of the cage, but banked off a UW defenseman and into the net. Freshman goaltender
Daniel Lebedeff took over backstopping duties for the remainder of the game.Â
In the final period, Gardner scored his third goal of the game to round out North Dakota's scoring and secure a 5-0 victory.Â
Berry ended the night with 11 saves, while Lebedeff stopped seven of eight shots. Â
Notes to Know:Â
- After tallying three power-play goals in two of its last three contests, the Badgers were 0-4 on the man advantage tonight.
- The 5-0 setback marks just the fifth time in the 171 games between UND and UW that the Badgers have been defeated by five or more goals.Â
- Despite the loss, Wisconsin outshot the Fighting Hawks 24-23 and recorded 41 shot attempts.Â

Head Coach Tony Granato
On the results of tonight's game:Â
"They were better than us right from the start of the game. They just played better. We just couldn't get enough players playing well to get anything going and change up the momentum. I feel bad for the goalies because it doesn't look right on the score sheet. The shots were even. The game was down to the level of special teams, five-on-five, puck battles -- straight across the board we played a team that was better than us, and we didn't handle it. In no part of the game were we good tonight. Was it coming in and being in awe of that team? I don't have the answer, but I don't think so. The mindset going into the game was right. We were excited to come here and play and we just didn't play well."
On pulling goaltender Jack Berry;Â
"We just needed to get him out of there. The fourth goal obviously wasn't his fault, so we didn't want to pull him after that and make it seem like we were blaming him. We waited a couple whistles and wanted to get Daniel (Lebedeff) in there to get some action and get him ready for tomorrow."Â
