GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Despite goals from senior
Will Johnson and sophomore
Tarek Baker, the No. 16 Wisconsin men's hockey team could not power past No. 14 North Dakota, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision Saturday night at Engelstad Arena.Â
Wisconsin (4-4-0, 0-0-0-0 B1G) dominated the Fighting Hawks (4-2-1, 0-0-0-0 NCHC) in the opening period of the game, but penalty trouble proved to be the Badgers' Achilles heel in the loss.Â
The Badgers got on the board first after Johnson crashed the crease and buried a centering pass from senior
Seamus Malone to make it a 1-0 game at the 4:48 mark of the first period. The goal came shortly after two penalty kills in the first 4:30 of the game.
The Fighting Hawks responded with a goal of their own a minute into the second period to tie the game, but despite back and forth chances for both UW and UND, the score remained knotted at one heading into the final frame.Â
Baker tipped a long-range shot from freshman defenseman
K'Andre Miller past UND goaltender Adam Scheel to make it a 2-1 game early in the third period, but the Fighting Hawks had the answer once again, however, as senior Nick Jones lit the lamp less than a minute later to knot the score at two.Â
After multiple scoring opportunities for both teams late in the final frame, the game remained locked at two at the end of regulation.
Penalties against sophomores
Josh Ess and
Tyler Inamoto that were assessed at the end of the third carried over to the extra frame, securing 21 seconds of 5-on-3 in overtime for the Fighting Hawks.Â
UND's Jacob Bernard-Docker found the back of the net in the final second of 5-on-3 to earn a 3-2 overtime victory over the Badgers.Â
Freshman goaltender
Daniel Lebedeff was sensational in the net for UW, making 30 stops for a .914 save percentage.Â
Notes to Know:
- The Badgers went 8-for-9 on the penalty kill in tonight's loss and 13-for-14 over the weekend.Â
- Lebedeff's 30 saves for UW are the most by Badger goaltender this season.Â
- Five UW skaters recorded points in the loss.Â

Head Coach Tony Granato
On running into penalty trouble:Â
"I can't argue with the fact that those were all penalties but I can say that a lot of the things we were called for happened the other way that we didn't get calls on. Referees do their best and make the calls that they see. Unfortunately they missed a few going the other way."Â
"We played hard, but you can't kill that many minutes of penalty. Your penalty killers are going to get tired or the other team is going to make a shot. Daniel (Lebedeff) was outstanding throughout those kills. He blocked a lot of shots. The penalty killers blocked a lot of shots. They put their bodies on the line many times and blocked big shots."Â
On the result of the game:
"We wanted the response of effort. That's what we wanted and that's what we got. As far as being pretty, it was an ugly road game, but we battled, scratched and clawed and found a way to stay in."Â
On Lebedeff's play:Â
"He was outstanding. He's been what we hoped he would be in his performances. He's very confident and looks the part. He's big, he forced a lot of shots wide. He's a competitor."Â
Freshman goaltender Daniel Lebedeff
On the results of the game:Â
"It was a tough loss. I think the boys did everything they could. The result was disappointing for us. I worked hard and everybody else gave everything. It was a good effort from everybody, but we can't always win. That's just the truth."Â
On the third goal:Â
"I didn't see it. There were a couple of bodies in front of me. You have to always try to work around them, but the shot came pretty fast and I couldn't see it anywhere."Â
On penalty trouble:Â
"I think our penalty kill was very good. A lot of guys were blocking shots and it was very organized. But if we take that many penalties, it's hard to win. Overall, we did pretty well on the PK and then a minute and a half left in the third, we take two penalties. That's tough. After the period when we killed them in the third period, I was pretty confident that we would bounce back. It's kind of like playing poker, it's a 50-50 chance if you can kill it or not, especially on 5-on-3.Â
Up Next:Â
The Badgers return home next week, Nov. 9-10, to host No. 8 Minnesota in a Border Battle series at the Kohl Center. Puck drop for both games is slated for 7 p.m. (CT).
