Badgers come back to top Lakers in series finale

UW closes out non-conference slate with 4-2 win

MADISON, Wis. – After falling behind early in the contest, the No. 9/10 Wisconsin men's hockey team found redemption for Saturday's loss by battling to a 4-2 win over Mercyhurst (5-5-2, 2-2-2 Atlantic Hockey) on Sunday at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (9-6-2, 3-2-1 Big Ten) outshot the Lakers 45-26 while recording 21 blocks to MU's 14 in the win.

It was the Badgers' first comeback victory this season, as the Lakers opened the scoring at the 16:23 mark of the first period. The 1-0 Mercyhurst lead held into intermission before the Badgers tied the game in the second period.

Freshman forward Sean Dhooghe scored his second career goal at 1:31 mark when he took advantage of a Wisconsin power play and crashed the net to sneak a rebound past MU goaltender Brandon Wildung.

Wisconsin took the lead for good late in the second period when junior Seamus Malone skated in on Wildung and shot low, creating a rebound that redirected off a Mercyhurst defender and into the net at 18:34.

The teams traded quick goals in the third period, but the Badgers came out on top with the 4-2 win. Junior Will Johnson caught a pass that came from behind the net and sent it over Wildung's glove for the two-goal lead.

Mercyhurst responded in the following minute to make the game 3-2, but just 24 seconds later senior Jake Linhart scored his first goal of the season on a one-timer from the point to re-claim the 4-2 advantage.

Straight From the Rink
Head Coach Tony Granato
"Let's give the other team some credit. They looked at it as an opportunity and they emptied the tank both nights. They came at us. They have an outstanding power play, an outstanding goaltender, some really good skill up front, they're older, they're experienced and they didn't quit when we got a lead. Give them credit for battling and making us battle right until the last minute but also look at some of the positive things we did offensively. I thought Seamus's line with Cameron and Will Johnson were outstanding again tonight. I thought last night they had plenty of chances to get a lot of goals for us and tonight they went in for them. They were outstanding."

On Seamus' line
"They generated a lot for us. They had good jump throughout the series. They supported each other very well without the puck. They were smart with their puck decisions. When the play was there to be made, they made it, and when it wasn't, they played smart. They were huge in the win tonight for sure."

On Jack Berry's play
"Very well. He was very solid. They had a team that didn't quit and they kept coming and made some real big saves when the game was on the line, that's for sure. Two of his three games this year were outstanding. We need a solid performance in net tonight and we got it."

Seamus Malone
On his goal
"Like I said last night, our line was working all weekend and we had a lot of chances. I thought we could've had a lot more goals but it's funny that those are the ones that go in but we'll take them."

Jack Berry
On being busy in the third period
"There were a lot of huge blocked shots out there. There was a lot of traffic in there. Guys definitely kept it out to the perimeter. Nothing really got in the house, in the net there so it was good by the guys."

On what tonight's performance means to him
"It's definitely a confidence boost. My last performance wasn't what I wanted but tonight I thought I kept rebounds outside. They guys definitely did a great job so I owe a lot to them, too."

Sean Dhooghe
On his power-play goal
"I think the biggest thing it was just give us a bit of a momentum swing. We were talking all game about getting bodies and pucks to the net. When one goes in the way we've been trying to go all weekend I think it's a good motivator for everyone on the bench."

On the team's play
"We've seen this a lot this year coming off a bad loss and we have responded in the past but we have to get to that level where we don't need to respond like that. It needs to be consistent every game that we play. We have to come hard. We have four really tough games coming up so we've got to focus on Friday against Minnesota and we have to get back to work."
