TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Thanks to an incredible run by senior captain
Sarah Disanza, the No. 17 Wisconsin women's cross country team earned a third-place showing at the 2017 NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Couse.
Â
Coming off of an eighth-place individual finish at the 2017 Big Ten Championships, it's no surprise that Disanza clinched a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet, thanks to a 6K time of 20 minutes, 43.9 seconds.
Â
Next for Wisconsin was sophomore
Amy Davis, who crossed the finish line in 20:53.2 to secure a ninth-place overall finish. Junior
Shaelyn Sorensen came next, earning the 13th-place spot with a time of 20:54.2.
Â
Rounding out the scoring for the Badgers were sophomores
Alicia Monson and
Alissa Niggemann. Monson finished the race in 21:15.1, with Niggemann coming in just a few seconds after in 21:22.8 to finish 31st and 36th, respectively.
Â
Throughout the first half of the race, Disanza, Davis, and Monson stuck together within the top fifteen runners, with Sorensen and Niggemann hot on their heels. In the last couple kilometers, the girls spread out, and finished with three runners in the top-fifteen.
Â
Notables:
- UW scored 93 points while No. 8 Michigan earned the regional title with a score of 71 and No. 21 Michigan State was the runner-up with 87 points.
- Disanza, Davis, and Sorensen all earned all-region honors thanks to their top-25 showing at the regional meet.
- The Badgers are poised to earn an at-large invitation to the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, on Nov. 18. UW will learn if it receives an invite on Saturday as the NCAA will announce the 31-team field for the national championship.
Straight from the Course:
Women's Cross Country and Track Coach Jill Miller:
On the women's race:
"The women ran intelligently today, showing that they are continuing to learn each step along the way. They raced together very well from the gun, used the field to block the gusty wind and put themselves in a great position to grab an at-large bid to the NCAA championships.
Â
Shaelyn Sorensen
On the team's performance:
"I was happy with how we did overall. We fought really hard and moved through really well with our plan. Even though it would have been nice to have that auto-bid, we're still pretty comfortable with where we are. In the end, it's all eyes on Louisville."
Â
Amy Davis
On the team's strategy:
"I feel like today we did a super nice job of continuing to be in packs and move forward during the race in groups. We always look towards not an individual thing, but a team thing, so I think that was super nice, because we continue to have the same theme throughout the year."
