Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

In-state rivalry belongs to Badgers

Mueller nets second-straight five-point game in 3-0 win over Marquette

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's soccer team (7-2-2 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) hosted the annual in-state contest at the McClimon Complex against the Marquette Golden Eagles (1-8-1, 1-2 Big East) on Wednesday night. The Badgers dominated the Golden Eagles on their home turf with a 3-0 non-conference win, scoring all three goals in the first half alone.

Wisconsin struck in the fifth minute of play off a corner kick from senior Chris Mueller. The ball found its way to junior Elan Koenig, who gave it the perfect touch for an easy finish for senior Tom Barlow. The goal is Barlow's fifth of the season.

Fifteen minutes later and Mueller ushered another ball into scoring position. This time Koenig took matters into his own hand, notching the game at 2-0 with his second goal of the season.
In the 27th minute, Mueller added to his already impressive resume on the night with a goal of his own. The 2016 All-American put the ball in with a wonderful header off a pass from senior Mark Segbers.

Wisconsin went into the half defending a 3-0 lead and put it in cruise control for the second. The Badgers held the majority of possession in the second half.

The win over Marquette adds to UW's 19-game unbeaten home streak. It is Wisconsin's fourth three-plus goal game and fourth game with multiple goals in a half.

Straight from the Pitch:
Head coach John Trask

On Chris Mueller:
"Great services on set pieces and it was nice to see him finally get a head ball goal. Excellent ball by Mark Segbers. I told the guys before the game, we're a mature team and we would find our opportunities. The opportunities came early and we finished off plays, that's soccer. Sometimes they come late in the game, sometimes they come early.

"I thought the young guys that came off the bench for us did a great job tonight, I was very pleased with the overall team performance, not just the starting group. We're seeing maturity out of those guys, which is important for the program."

On the in-state rivalry win:
"It's huge, we talk about it all the time. A lot of our guys were recruited by them, a lot of their players maybe had an opportunity to play for us.

"The Wisconsin derby games are absolutely massive, everybody has one across the country. The team we play this weekend, Michigan State had a derby against Western Michigan, Indiana played Evansville. These are our derbys. Marquette, we've got Green Bay next weekend and Milwaukee the following week. If there's not some state pride, there's something wrong with you. We love being in the Big Ten and representing the university in that context and out of conference, but playing your rivalry games, it always matters. It should matter."

On Michigan State:
"They have one loss on the season, they're very very well coached, very good team. Lot of maturity, we played against them last year and we expect nothing less. Our plan is to have Mike Catalano back out there on Saturday and that will help.

"It will be a huge battle, now we're getting into the top tier, the Big Ten teams. I think we're ready for it, they've been waiting for this part of the season. We're relatively healthy, knock on wood, and we'll move on to Saturday against the number one team in the country in terms of the RPI."

Up Next: The Badgers will play host to No. 1-ranked (RPI) Michigan State on Saturday night at the McClimon Complex. Scarf Giveaway night will be celebrated while supplies last.
