PRINCETON, N.J. – The Wisconsin men's rowing program returned east for the second consecutive weekend, avoiding a predicted challenging weather forecast for solid early season results on Lake Carnegie.
With multiple entries in both the varsity eight and varsity four, the Badgers' top varsity eight placed fourth, while its varsity four claimed second place. Both events had more than 30 entries.
"So today in the first eight, while we finished fourth like last year, we were nine seconds out of the win as opposed to last year we were 27 seconds out," head coach
Chris Clark said. "That is an improvement."
Princeton, rowing with home-lake advantage, won the varsity eight in 12:32.476 over 2.75 miles. Dartmouth (12:36.791) and Syracuse (12:41.462) rounded out the top three, with Wisconsin's top boat fourth in 12:41.724. UW's B boat ended up sixth in 12:50.114, while the Badgers' C entry crossed the finish line in 13:13.895 for 17th place. Thirty-seven boats competed in the eight.
"The B boat we had selected, and like most teams here, no one has spent a lot of time selecting their boats so it is always a little bit of a throw together. That boat was the top B boat," Clark said.
"There were a few little errors here and there. This is true in a lot of boats in races like this because of the nature of a head race single file time trial. It sounds easy, but is also easy to make little errors that cost your time.
"The guys did well. We are not really slick enough at this point. The very fastest boats technically are sounder, but I am not too worried about that at this point. We just want to keep moving closer to the top."
Wisconsin's top varsity four entry was less than six seconds behind winner Princeton, which clocked 13:51.950. The second-place Badgers timed 13:57.648. UW also saw its boats place eighth, 12
th, 14
th, 16
th and 20
th out of 31 entries.
"In the four, excellent performance," Clark said. We were second. I think that is the best we've done, if not the best, in a long time and close to the win.
"You can tell we are getting a little better. Nobody is expecting a parade when they get home for those finishes, even though it is really the best we've had in the four years we've come. They just want more and that is a good place to be."
STRAIGHT FROM THE LAKE:
Head coach
Chris Clark
"We are right in the middle of a turnaround and turnarounds are always a lot easier to see when you are few years down the line. Back up a couple of years ago and we had the look of a lot of the historical Wisconsin crews, but we were missing some key elements, the No. 1 is toughness. We don't internationally recruit, we develop, and the high school rowers we do get are often unheralded and from small programs so we have no other options except to do that. Given those parameters, you must have toughness and it takes you a long way and from there you can go. It really has been a long time and I am happy to see it appears to be back. We are on a slow climb. Not great leaps, but incremental."
